STORE & BREEDING CATTLE - WEDNESDAY 31st JULY 2019

Fortnightly Sale of Young Feeding Bulls, Store Bullocks & Heifers, Breeding Cattle. Forward: 382 head of cattle. Comprising: 354 Feeding Cattle (55 Young Bulls, 45 Beef Feeding Cows/Cast Bulls, 254 Bullocks & Heifers) & 28 Breeding Cattle.

With prime bulls a difficult trade, the store bull prices today exceeded expectations, probably helped by a wet start to the day in arable areas and consequently a good attendance of buyers. With under 12 month old bulls running short now there was only £50 difference between the under 10 months and 11 to 12 months averages which reflects the current low factory prices.

A strong competitive audience for the beef feeding cows finished with an average of £868 each for the 45 head on offer, which is indicative of the relatively good demand for farm assured manufacturing meat. That said a non farm assured Limousin cross cow made £1065.  4 Cows coming to £1100 or more today, and another 15 between £900 and £1100.

Stores  a decent trade today with plenty of strength on offer and these receiving a slightly better enquiry, especially bullocks which were very good to sell. Smart strong bullocks from Peter Fox of Clitheroe leading the way with 3 at £1280, 3 at £1260 and 2 at £1240 all around 15-16 months old. Michael & Susan Winchester, Coniston Cold presented their Annual consignment of homebred cattle 14-15months , with Limousin to £1200 and a pair of Angus cross at £1095 then 3 Angus at £1055. John Schindler from Thorpe had a run of British Blue Bullocks 22mo £1140 and £1180 and Edward Burrow, Lancaster had a pen of 3 Blue crosses at £1175. Greame Coates, Barrowford led the heifer prices with a lovely homebred Blue heifer at £1280, and Dennis Collins, Parbold made £1210 and £1190 which was also achieved by E&M Townley & Son, Clapham.
