There was a good show of over 2,500 sheep today for the 19 buyers who were ringside to bid at. Old Season Lambs were dearer on the week, Smart end saw 71 pens sell for £2 per kilo or more, Top price was 260.5p/kg for 38kg Beltex at £99 from John Eddleston of Great Harwood, these purchased by Vivers Scotlamb. The average for the Beltex’s was 216.4p/kg.
The top price per head was £107.50, for a pen of 45kg Beltex’s, which was paid to Hayley Baines whose lambs were purchased by Hartshead Meat Company. A further 6 pens of lambs sold for over £100, with another 45 pens sold for £90 to £99.50.
The nice commercial export sheep were dearer on the week, 36kg to 43kg sheep mainly around 190p to 210p, plainer sorts 185p. Texels in the 36kg to 45kg weight range averaged 196.4p/kg.
Hill bred sheep were also dearer on the week. Good Mule lambs 43kg to 46kg making £32 to £35 over the weight. Sample prices were Gary Schofield with 47kg at £80, Peter Houseman with 43kg at £78, WM Hall 49kg at £85, Andrew Taylor 49kg at £80, Glen Bell 53kg at £82, Bill Bland 44kg at £78, Keith Downs 47kg at £80 and 46kg at £79. Mules average 171.6p.
Cheviot and Gritstone lambs sold well with Chris Crowther topping with Cheviot x Lonks weighing 40kg at £81. Horned lambs were £3 to £4 each dearer on the week, with good Swaledale and Dalesbred Wether lambs selling at £25 to £28 over the weight.
The 375 cast sheep on offer were a sharp trade, with well fleshed but not overfat heavy sheep very good to sell. Texel and Continental ewes topped the sale at £128.50 from Kevin Marshall averaging £75.70. The overall average for Ewes and Rams was £52.05.

55 Calves forward for the final sale of January with 15 +buyers filling the ringside, black and whites once again good to sell with Peter and Jonathon Sharp achieving £150 for a Pure Holstein Bull. The 14 Blue Calves forward achieved a good average with Bulls averaging £369 and topped at £400 for a Flareon Son from Peter and Shaun Sowray. Limousin’s were in shorter supply with Mark Smith, Winterburn making £260 for a 3mth old Bull which ended up heading to Clitheroe.

BOCM Pauls Dairy Sale once again well supported with plenty of punters ringside and a flying trade to match. Richard Crabtree of Otley was the man to judge and David Lawson was the winner with a Home bred Pedigree heifer with Richard Walker of East Morton a close second. All the milkers sold to well above predictions with punters aplenty, Brian Moorhouse of Bellbusk set the trade with a Week Calved Pedigree Heifer making £2300 and this trade continued right the way through, even Incalf heifers sold strongly with Mick Corner of Easingwold receiving £1850 for Pure Holstein incalf to Grosvenor Sex Semen.
