PRIME SHEEP (2,683 Head)
No shortage of sheep at Skipton today, and a decent trade as well. There is no need for us to inflate the numbers sold and average prices on our report to make them look better, unlike some of the local competition today!
A straight show of spring lambs were a nice trade averaging £114 overall. Tops at £146 or 304.2p/kg for a pair of Suffolk cross lambs from Mark Evans, Steeton were purchased on behalf of Stephen Maskill Quality Meats of Sowerby Bridge. The next best pen came from Charles & Valerie Marwood, Whenby with 2 Charollais lambs at £140 or 304.0p/kg purchased by RC&B Binns & Daughter, Retail Family Butchers in Saltaire.
In the hogg market, still plenty coming forward, and the good meat again found buyers keen, topping the market with a pen of 15 Beltex crosses weighing 41kg at £127 each or 309.8p/kg was Messrs Blezard of Ribchester purchased by John Gibson of Vivers Scotlamb, Annan. Some good runs of commercial Continental and Cheviot hoggs often achieved 220p to 240p, whilst good Mules were 180p to 200p. Buyers though are obviously taking much more attention to meat and finish, with hoggs short of flesh seeing a very obvious price difference per kilo to those well fed sorts on the day.

A tidy entry of sheep and lambs were forward for sale today, and the weekly entries are now on the seasonal increase to 300 to 500 outfits per week by around the turn of the month. The milder weather over the last few days certainly helped to bring an extra customer or 2 by having provided the slightest hint of spring grass. Good young sheep found a ready ringside of buyers all keen to purchase the quality types at £180 to £250 per outfit. Older sheep with strong lambs, twins or singles, found prices around £155 to £165 per family for twins, £100 per family for singles.
Prospective purchasers please note that there are several lots of young sheep, Shearlings and young correct ewes, already entered for next week’s sale. SPECIAL YOUNGSTOCK SALE
A fine spring day produced a straight trade for the 37 Heifers from WP Gratton and 7 from E Pennock & Sons. Heifers from 6- 17mths went under the hammer and with punters having one eye on the weather the trade was cautious but warmed up once into the older end of the heifers. Buyers came from far and wide to have a chance at some fine pedigree heifers from the Startover herd and pushed all the heifers to an overall average of £634.88. Further Heifers will be going under the hammer in May but the attention now switches to the male spectrum and the pedigree bull sale next week. Prefix’s Include; Stardale, Dalesbrad, Abbeyhouse, Aireburn, Soothill, Crosland, Hawbank and Feizor.
