PRIME SHEEP (2,689 Head)
The Monthly Prime Sheep show was very well supported and judging undertaken by Mr Nick Dalby. There were some excellent lambs forward and the champion and reserves were both consigned by Mr Neil Tattersall of Ellerton, York selling at £139 and £126 each both lots purchased by James Robertshaw of Keelham Farm Shop, Thornton.
A much increased show this week as vendors begin drawing at lambs, and the season taking its toll with the average weight only being 39.3kg, some 2kg lighter than normal for the time of year, but with averages standing at 227.7p/kg right through it looks a very wise choice by those vendors who chose to consign lambs to market today when the by head average is £89.61 (£16 per head or 44p/kg in front of the same week in 2012). Vast majority of commercial lambs regardless of weight around 220p to 225p/kg, prime lambs 230p to 240p and the smart end generally 250p to 300p, a few pens getting top side of 300p.
Cast sheep were a shade sharper trade on the week with less horned sheep in the entry this week.
