PRIME SHEEP (2,944 Head)
Lambs took the dip in price that was expected following the downward trend of last week. Todays’ market levelled at just a shade under 170p, some 45p down on the week, in line with the national average for the day. Anything well fleshed and 40kg plus sold best, the smarter end 180p to 220p, commercial types 165p to 175p, but too many lighter lambs forward today in the 33kg to 37kg bracket to be able to face a falling trade and these selling at 155p to 165p, 10p to 15p behind mart average. Now might be the time to turn these away for a month. A very large show of 660 ewes contained over 400 horned ewes and this reflects in the overall average at £35.

REARING CALVES to £505 average £173
The sublime to ridiculous, a largely turbulent trade with Continental calves and Native calves a fantastic trade but second quality Black and Whites a struggle to sell. Pick of the trade was a strong British Blue Bull Calf from Colin Whitelock of Gargrave which made £505 and followed by another from Colin making £500. The Sowray Brothers and Church Farm Enterprises followed closely behind the top price, with a blue average of £443.18. Angus Calves also met a flying trade with Church Farm Enterprises having the pick of the bunch with a run of calves all above £300 and topping £330, overall average for Angus Bulls ended up at £261.43. Black and White calves met a harsher trade with anything not top quality struggling. Despite a good portion of calves reaching £90+ the trade slid to an average of £57. However Black and White trade is expected to be back up again with an extra buyer attending next week.

CRAVEN DAIRY AUCTION (37 head)
Similar to today’s calves, the trade was up and down with anything not quite 12 o’clock struggling to hit the trade of previous months. However when the likes of David Lawson, Jeremy Taylor and new vendor Phillip Penrose hit the ring hands were very fidgety. The pick of the bunch was a 3 week calved Pedigree Heifer giving 30litres from David Lawson which reached £2720 and sold to the Kayley family of Halton West. A run of InCalf heifers from RN Verity Ltd met a good trade with some well fleshed, springing to calve commercial heifers reaching £1500 twice and being snapped up by Martyn Jennings, Cowling.
