Heavy Lowland lambs (46kg to 52kg) were a similar trade to last week, with the smartest end making 190p to 215p, to a top of 234p for 46kg adding up to £108 from Mark & Gemma Dobson, Hartlington. Ellis Bros topped the heavy lambs with 51kg selling at £110 each to Kendall’s Farm Butchers of Harrogate and Pateley Bridge.
The handier weighted lambs were dearer on the week, especially for the more commercial types. Smart types topped at £115 per head from Kevin Marshall of Darley selling to Countrystyle Meats of Lancaster. Ellis Bros sold Beltex crosses to £113 each purchased by Vivers Scotlamb. K Saffrey, Halton West had Beltex to £109, whilst Kevin Marshall had further pens at £106 £105 and £102, Ellis Bros £105 and James Towler of Grindleton to £103. A great success at the February show for the Sowray family with their British Blue X heifer taking the Championship and the top price at £490, a heifer winning is a bit of a rarity in recent times however this was an exceptional heifer and went on to top the sale selling to the Abbot Bros of Dacre.
David Smith from Bents Farm took reserve Champion with his super bull which sold at £430 to Simon Thompson. Shaun Sowray saw his best the bulls make £450, £445 and £440 with Church Farm Enterprises at £420 and £405. 20 British Blue Bulls averaged £385.
Limousin calves topped at £365 for a sweet bull from Stephen Marshall, West End with heifers topping at £380 for a cracking heifer from Sowray’s again. Black and Whites were a touch easier today with not the best show of calves around however best calves still up towards £100 and topping today at £95 for a strong Friesian type calf from RL Wright & Son.
