Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

A very good trade with price up another notch with retail customers keen for stock. Top call was £1502 or 254.5p/kg paid by Ellisons Butchers of Cullingworth for a 590kg Charolais cross heifer consigned by Charles and Richard Kitching of Threshfield. Top Price of the day was 258.5p/kg for a 540kg Limousin cross heifer which realised £1396 when sold by F&B Smith of Weshouse to Keelham Farm Shop of Skipton. George Cropper Jnr of Baxenden was back at the ringside with 2 heifer purchases including the joint highest price p/kg at 258.5p/kg a 580kg British Blue cross (£1499), yet another entry from the finishing pens of Mesrs Kitching. Kitchings also sold a 550kg British Blue cross heifer at 247.5p/kg or £1361 to prolific buyer Robertshaws Farm Shop of Thornton. Next Monday is Bank holiday and we are expecting extra interest for retail customers.

Numbers back towards the normal sort of figures for the time of year, with nicely over 3000 head in total. More Spring Lambs were on offer and some good sorts available too, but as usual with first draw lambs from inside there was also plenty of weight on offer. Top price per kilo belonged to some nice Continentals weighing 39kg selling at £123 from CR&M Wilson of Wilpshire, Blackburn purchased onbehalf of Rowland Agar Wholesale Butchers, Ilkley. Top price per head at £126 was jointly achieved on 3 occasions, first were Suffolk Texel crosses from RJ&J Towers Ltd, Ingleton selling again to Rowland Agar (Wholesale Butchers) Ltd, then from CW&V Marwood of Whenby selling Charollais’s again to Agar’s and finally MJ Spensley of Elslack selling Suffolk Texel crosses to Messrs Swales of Knavesmire Butchers in York.

The 2848 Hoggs in todays sale sold to an SQQ average of 225p (up to 45kg) and an overall selling average 207p right through, a reflection of the trade at the moment with handyweight sheep being relatively good to sell, but heavier sheep being harder to place. The smart sorts were as good as ever to sell, 250p to 300p being common place, topping at 359p (39kg £140) on two occasions from HB Atkinson of Kettlesing, who sold others at 343p 342p and 337p. RA&SE Spink of Rookwith, Ripon sold at 343p or tops per head of £147.40 to Messrs Swales for their Knavemsire Butchers shop in York.
Lowland lambs weighing in the late 30’s and into the 40’s were a sharp trade, and we could have sold more in this weight range, heavier lambs from mid 40’s to 50kg/51kg region saw commercial types 185p to 190’s and nice sorts towards £2, with butchers and farm shop types above this. The Hill bred lambs 40kg to 45kg also got away nicely, with better sorts around £2. The very heavy lambs are the things that are struggling at the moment with restaurant/catering trade and London meat markets seeing demand virtually at a stand still with restrictions currently in place.
A nice show of ewes sold away well, tops at £121.50 for Texels from JS Lodge of Doncaster, other heavier ewes £110 to £120. Ewes averaged £71.75, and rams £82, with a run of goats at £59.50.

 Rearing Calves to £275 (41)

Good sale in the calf ring today with a total of 41 heads going through the ring. Black and Whites sold to a top of £170 and went to average £127.50. Aberdeen Angus Bull calves sold to £275 and went onto average £195.

A lot of smaller ended calves with the continentals today with Blue Bulls only selling to £255 but a nice average of £202. Blue Heifers went onto average £195 which sold well considering a lot of young calves was included in the mix. Angus Heifers sold to £195 from Steven Marshall.
