May Show
An excellent show of clean cattle met a ready audience with 10 customers seeking retail cattle with the classes judged by Martin Brown. A worthy champion was a 500kg Limousin cross heifer consigned by Mesrs AA&E Critchley & Son of Hutton near Preston which sold to Countrystyle Butchers at Lancaster for 299.5p/kg or £1536. Reserve Champion was a 555kg British Blue Heifer picked from the pen of Malcolm Metcalfe of Baldersby which sold to the judge for 258.5p/kg or £1435. Overall averages were Steers 226.43p/kg and Heifers 238.06p/kg.

Cast cattle met the same trade despite the absence of one or two buyers because of the bank holiday. With lean dairies and non-assured native crosses predominating 118p average was a very good reflection of the current strong demand

2,162 Prime Sheep
Once again over 2,100 Prime, Cast and Feeding Sheep in the entry as the Bank Holiday had absolutely no effect on numbers, but a shortage of sheep elsewhere led to a stronger trade this afternoon.
Spring Lambs were a more mixed show, with more first cross lambs out of Mule ewes in the entry today, but still the overall average stands at 232.7p for 174 head sold, which is a good result on the day. The Monthly Prize show was judged by Mr Nick Dalby and the Champion pair came from Neil Tattersall of York weighing 39kg selling for £150 to Countrystyle Meats of Lancaster. Mr Tattersall sold a second pen of 40kg lambs which sold for 302.5p/kg or £121 to Hartshead Meat Co, Mossley. Neil sold a third pen, the reserve champions, for 319.4p/kg to Countrystyle Meats. Whiteheads Butchers in Edgeworth were in good buying form again buying a pen at 310.5p or £118 each from Robert Towers of Farleton.
Generally there was a better show of Old Season Lambs this week with the 1677 head on offer averaging 176.5p/kg all in. Tim Robinson had top price per head and per kilo with Beltex at £105 or 228.3p/kg selling to Hartshead Meats in Mossley, others at £104 and £103 from Henry Atkinson, £101 and £100 from Nick Capstick of Bolton by Bowland, Martin Jennings £100.50, and Kevin Marshall £100. Hill hoggs were a very good trade, Steve Dorey making £89.50, £89, £88 three times, £86.50 twice and £85 of Mules, Davis Pratt also making £85 of Mules. Tony Kiernan made £91 of Cheviots and John Lord also made £88.50 of Cheviots, £83.50 of Lonks and £80 of Gritstones. Dick Burley topped the Swales at £80 and £79.50.
Cast Sheep were forward in larger numbers and a trade to match with buyers in good form, not as many of the heavy continental sheep but the top prices still into three figres, Mules into the 80’s and best horned ewes to £79.50 from Steven Morris.

2501 Breeding Sheep
Bank Holiday Monday was a very busy day in the sheep market at Skipton with The Great Annual Prize Show of Hoggs with Lambs and Geld Gimmer Hoggs held today alongside the Weekly Sale of Prime Sheep.
2,501 Breeding Sheep were forward for sale, with the sale commencing with Geld Gimmer Hoggs. These attracted a very large company of buyers, and all classes sold very easily. David Boothman of Halton East topped the section with a pen of Beltex crosses selling for £160 each. Ron Wartigg of Thurgoland was very close behind as his pen of 10 sold for £158, and Jill Perrings of Giggleswick sold Texels at £150 each. Best of the Mules was Donald Sunderland from Halton East whose first prize pen sold for £140 each, others at £134 and £128, Mathew Middleton from Gisburn had a nice run of Mules and these sold to £135, the other best types on the day were around £125-£130, and commercial types £110-£120. A nice show of Swaledales topped at £130 from Nick and Emma Parker.
The Hoggs with Lambs were a decent selling trade, and a nigh on total clearance was effected, but trade was generally similar to last year. Robert Johnson had top pen of Mules with hoggs to £250, £220 and £200, David Coates made £210 of the 1st Prize Mules with Singles, Thomas Boothman topped at £220 twice and £210 for Texels with Singles, Rob Atkinson of Beck Hill, Scorton had his tremendous Annual Consignment and these sold to £220, £215, £210 and £200 on 8 separate occasions, whilst John Stapleton of Skipton had some strong outfits selling to £215 £210 £205 and £200 twice. Out with these, Mules could be bought from £165 to £185 depending on the outfits, and Continentals from £155 to £175.
Another Large show of Ewes with Lambs found a large company of buyers and trade was generally a shade stronger on the week. Next Week we anticipate an entry of 350 to 400 Outfits so plenty of choice for all. Please advise the mart office of entries by Friday Lunchtime. Thankyou.

What a trade but where were the calves. A bank holiday and a shed full of buyers meant a short sale but an electric trade. All of the 30 calves sailed well past the mark with John Marshall of Dacre having a flying trade with his two sweet british blue bulls at £400, however Stephen Marshall of West End topped overall with his Limousin bull at £420 and its mate at £400.
Natives were sold to a high of £345 for a Hereford bull from John Blackwell at Gargrave and a Hereford heifer to £300 from John Marshall of Dacre.
Black and whites were also electric and a heap more could have been sold with a sale average £110 and up to £180 for a strong Holstein Friesian from Wrights of Kirk Syke.
Calves wanted with seasonal buyers out in force at the minute.
