3,115 Prime Sheep

A nice show of sheep but trade as expected was less on the week. Nice lambs 40kg to 44kg in decent demand, smarter lambs 36kg to 40kg were also reasonably bid for on the day, but as numbers grow then as usual the first things to get discounted are the 37kg-39kg under finished types. For best returns keep the lambs well fleshed. Vendors please note that Farm Assurance is also now an increasing factor with several buyers.

Today we held our Annual Young Handlers Prime Lamb Show & Sale Competition. 24 Youngsters took part in the competition spread across 3 age ranges. It was a great competition, aimed at introducing youngsters not only into the art of preparing and showing a lamb, but also of presenting the lamb in the sale ring and experiencing the live auction system and understanding what happens to the lamb that they have produced. On behalf of the competitors, our thanks also to the buyers for supporting them so well when purchasing the stock. Results below.

Rearing Calves to £400 (59)

B&W av £33 Cont av £288 Native av £195

A good entry of calves with 60% Black and Whites, unfortunately a number of plain calves around, had it not been for these B&W’s would be well into the 40’s. Continentals were well supported with some big prices coming both the British Blues and Limousins’, Church Farm Enterprises where trade toppers again with their Blue Bull reaching the heights of £400 and a Heifer to £370 with Alf Townsend making £280 out of a strong Limousin Bull.

Craven Dairy Auction (34 head)

A big show with a lot of cattle unentered arriving and making a good shippon full of newly calved heifers. Despite the shippon full trade was strong especially for those well presented cattle like those of Robin Jennings and Shaun Hickey who made £2300 and £2250. Other vendors also met a stiff trade with Chris Broadwith of Thornton Watlass pushing into the top prices with a lovely heifer reaching a deserved £2250.

However with such big numbers anything not quite 12 o’clock was an easier trade with some good heifers in the £1700 - £1850 region and some honest tank fillers in the £1500 - £1700.

I can’t help feel that the ARLA price reduction recently has had an impact on the confidence of many farmers and this has clearly had an influence on price today.
