A solid lamb trade today with more numbers (up 27%) and overall averages up by 7p, levelling at 191.55p/kg, but it fair to say there was a better show for weight, with no lambs in the 32kg to 35kg weight range this week and more about weighing over 40’s, and the crowd of buyers responded to the offering with sharp bidding.
Todays Monthly Prize Show of Lambs was kindly judged by Mr George Cropper and there were 34 pens in the three classes for him to make his choice from. It was Richard and Jonathan Frankland of Rathmell that came out with Champion and Reserve pens today, at 41kg and 43kg respectively, both sold to the judge at £100 each.
The smart lamb trade today was not vastly different to recent weeks, Best end of Beltex crosses making 230p to 250p, other 200p to 230p, but it was the prime and commercial lambs 42kg to 48kg that were very good to sell, mainly 185p plus, with well fleshed Texel first crosses either side of 190p, and better ¾ bred types either side of 200p. More Mule Wether lambs about, and averaging 170p/kg, anything with a bit extra weight adding up well in the lump.
Cast Ewes were a much larger entry (600 head) and nearly 1/3 were hill bred, and of the lowland ewes there were plenty of worn types, but an average of £52 was a solid result with the leaner end being dearer on the week, and heavy ewes were short of buyers requirements, best Continentals into 3 figures, and best Mules £80-£90.

Good trade for calves today with Natives, Continental bulls and Black and whites on the receiving end of a good trade. A mixed show was present this morning however a strong ringside of buyers meant for a healthy trade with Robert Metcalfe of Brearton topping at £425 and Richard Spence from Sutton in Craven at £410 and £405. Native well bid for throughout with bulls averaging £290. And topping at £330 for a strong Aberdeen Angus bull from JP & KE Hartley.
Black and whites had six buyers chasing them and forcing a healthy trade with an average of £60.71. More calves wanted every week to maintain buyer attendance and with decent trades like today more should be coming through the door.
