3,339 Prime Sheep

Trade was variable today depending upon the quality and weight of the sheep.

Regardless of the fact that there were 14 active buyers at the ringside, processors are still reporting trade slack, even with the euro falling 2 cents against the pound this morning. More heavy lambs about today as producers try to keep returns above £70 from grass, and many of the heavy sheep would achieve this with the 45.6kg to 52kg bracket averaging £70.95 per head.

Handy weighted sheep were a straight trade on the day, and the Skipton average of 152p across the board would be a reasonable result on the day, with many reporting averages of 5p-6p less than this mark. Some smart lambs topped £2kilo, but it took a smart one to do it.

Cast sheep however were keenly contested and with mainly sucked ewes in the entry a £58 average looks well.

Craven Dairy Auction (29 head)

A hard day selling with a lot of strong dairy cattle hard sold, the knock on effect of the downturn in the dairy sector.

Robert Crisp took top honours with David Lawson taking a deserved second in the show ring. But all eyes were on the sale ring with concerns how much cheaper the milkers would be. Thankfully a responsive ringside made the cattle a straighter trade than first predicted with a respectable overall average for 1st Class and Pedigree Heifers of £1751 and Cows £1606.
