Beef Shorthorn Sale RepThe Beautry herd of Pedigree Beef Shorthorns had the standout pen of cattle at the Beef Shorthorn Society’s Autumn sale of breeding cattle held at Skipton. Stuart and Gail Currie who farm at Rathmell sent out the Supreme Champion Beautry Rose Lolita a quality Roan March 2017 daughter of Poyntington Himself the half sister to Kooky Rose the northern calf show champion in 2016 and reserve at the 2017 Skipton sale.
Scanned incalf to Stonehills Jackpot, Lolita joined Thistledown Cowford Farms for 5800gns who then stepped up to buy the Reserve Champion Beautry Shuna Liesl bred from the strongest dam line at Beautry through CroxtonPark Shuna Titania and by Pontington Himself for a new centre record of 11,000gns. Following up with their second prize Junior heifer Beautry Desiree Lyric bred from the Beautry Excaliber daughter Beautry Hibiscus. Lyric had already won a reserve championship at North Yorkshire Show and a 4th Prize at the Great Yorkshire Show and with a positive pd to Stonehills Jackpot became a 5000gn purchase for Gates Farming Partnership of Oakham.
The Podehole herd of Harry Horrell represented by Charles and Sally produced the second prize junior heifer (born 010417 to 010517) the roan ‘Podehole Gypsy Laura’ bred from the EXC91 ‘Podehole Gypsy Diamond’ and sired by ‘Knockenjig Hercules’ and with high calving ease and growth EBVs joined A&C Farms for 5000gns.
The first heifer into the ring and first prize senior heifer came from the Upsall herd of the Rt Hon Gerald Turton, Tessa X1179 of Upsall a Grenadier daughter bred from the Democrat of Upsall daughter, Tessa X914 of Upsall, carrying a pd to Lawyer of Upsall set the salering going with a 4000gn bid from Loakfarm ,Perth.
Trade was spirited for top end quality cattle with buyers looking for good EBVs and strength in the heifers. The commercial end of maiden heifers was well supported with buyers looking for pedigrees, embryo recipients and stewardship scheme cattle.
The Shorthorn Cattle Society supported Dispersal of the Newfields Herd on instructions of Michael Abrahams CBE DL saw a leading price of 5200gns for Newfield Ecstasy Foxglove a 2011 Holmeere Fraser cow bred from the favourite Foxglove family at Newfield which sold with her Sleightholme Star Thistle sired heifer calf and scnned incalf sold to G Hunt of Thirsk for 5200gns.
The much-admired Roan Newfield Goddess Foxglove, a Connor of Upsall daughter sold with her Sleightholme Thistle sired heifer calf, who stood second at the this years Great Yorkshire Show sold to Sleightholmedale Partnership for 3800gns.
Pick of the maiden heifers was Newfield Liza Foxglove a well grown January 2017 born Sleightholme Sat Thistle daughter which joined Malcolm Wood of Birkenshaw for 1800gns.
Both sales saw a packed ringside with interest drawn from throughout the UK.
