4,417 Prime Sheep

A cracking show with about 4,000 lambs penned for the third week in a row. Heavy lambs and best lambs were a fast trade all day long and plenty of 3 figure prices in the mix. £117 per head was achieved on 2 occasion, first by L Simpson & Sons, Pateley Bridge with 52kg Texels purchased by Kendalls Farmers Butchers of Pateley Bridge and Harrogate, and then also by Nick Capstick, Bolton by Bowland with a pen of 41kg Beltex’s that were also top price per kilo at 285p, Mr Captick had other pens at £113, £112 £109 and £108.50. Henry Atkinson presented a wonderful run of Beltex crosses, topping at £115, others at £114 and £110 twice. Ian Bell of Carleton had Beltex to £110, Anthony Hewetson topped his run at £109, as did Paul Simpson and Ian Marsden. All in, there was 59 separate pens or 230 head sold for £100 or more. Per kilo prices at the top end saw Nick Capstick sell at 285p 275p 273p 271p and 254p. Paul Simpson sold lambs at 284p and 272p. Anthony Hewetson 272p, Walter Parkinson 271p 265p 254p, James Garth & Son 271p 264p, Henry Atkinson 268p 255p, Ken Marston 259p, Taylor Bros 258p, Richard & Mark Ireland 252p, John Garnett 251p.
Heavy Lambs were a sharp trade all day and would be £2 to £5 apiece dearer on the week, especially commercial sorts, at the top end there were some good smart heavy types for local retail trade in the 200p to 230p bracket. Mule wethers sold well again, mainly either side of 170p depending on quality, prime weight horned lambs were also good to sell, whilst lightweights were not just as dear as last week.

NB: Remember no sale on either Christmas Day or New Years day, but we are holding a Special Afternoon Sale of Prime Cattle and Prime Sheep on Thursday 28th December. Speak to Ted nearer the time for usual requirements.

A plainer show of calves overall meant for an easier trade throughout as a result of it being the calf sale of the year. However the best calves sold away well with a bull from Chadwick and Leaver making the top price of the day at £430 for a tremendous Simmental calf with Sowray Bros topping the British Blue bulls at £410. Natives good to sell with Alan Middleton of Hartley’s Bolton Abbey had the top price Aberdeen Angus bull at £350 with John Marshall of Dacre topping the heifers at £300. Only a small show of black and whites today with mainly small Holsteins on offer, apart from a Friesian x at £95 from Stephen Marshall, West End.

A quiet show for the final sale of the year however a healthy trade was had by all. Top calls of the day came from Robin Jennings and Robert Crisp with both heifers reaching £1800.  The homebred pedigree heifer from Robin Jennings was giving a mighty 36kg and was snapped up by regular supporter Mark Goodall. Mr Crisps heifer was giving 24kg and was very quick to milk also raced to £1800 when selling to Peter Sowray of Bishop Thornton.
