PRIME SHEEP (2,172 Head)
There was a massive show of sheep today for the time of year, with stock drawn from a wide area covering much of the North of England, to meet the needs of a packed ringside of buyers for all classes.
There was a slightly larger entry of spring lambs (126) this week and they were easily sold as more customers now make the switch. The quality types were easily making £3 per kilo or more, making it worthwhile the creep feeders having been in the fields for these early season vendors. Top Prices belonged to Joe & Trevor Stoney from Pateley Bridge at £142 each or 337.8p/kg, their consignment of 23 Spring Lambs averaging 302.8p/kg or £126 each.
In the Prime Hogg market a grand entry of 1,730 head levelled at 205.1p/kg, and bear in mind that this average includes the 159 mature hoggs (teeth up) so a good result all round. Meated Hoggs 40 to 45kg selling at 220p to 240p, even the heavies 50kg plus averaging over 200p/kg.
The 329 head of cast sheep were good to sell, averaging £58, any heavy ewes well over £100. Messrs F. Reeday & Son selling Suffolks to £129.50, Michael Hall from Airton selling Texels at £129.50 and Mark & Willie Keighley, Leathley selling Texels at £128.50.

BREEDING SHEEP
The weekly sale attracted a nice entry of over 200 outfits which sold to a straight trade. Continental Hoggs with lambs were nice to sell all sale long, with some vendors reporting prices slightly up on the week. The Mule hoggs and lambs show a £10 per outfit fall in price on the week, but with no show pens to help lift the average this week, again a straight trade. A varied selection of mainly older ewes with lambs saw keen interest in those with strong lambs, a few outfits with young lambs finding the going slightly tougher.
Next Week: 2nd Special Show & Sale for Mule & Continental Hoggs with Lambs at foot (pens of 5). Also there are advance collective entries from several vendors of 200 Mule & Continental Geld Hoggs for next Monday. Please pre enter where possible for online catalogue by 12 noon Friday. Thankyou.
