Forward: 524 head of cattle
Comprising: 524 Feeding Cattle (93 Young Bulls, 37 Beef Feeding Cows & Bulls, 395 Bullocks & Heifers)
Feeding Bulls – another damp start to the day helped buyers make up their minds early and so a few more were able to attend the feeding bull sale than anticipated. Trade was very good which is as much a reflection of pens on feeders farms emptying rapidly as they sell 2018 spring born animals in spec. The bales under 10 months were keenly contested. Any and the heavy over 13 month bulls were a surprisingly good trade.
Feeding Cows – A grand entry of feeding cows attracted the usual strong line up of buyers and all classes sold along at similar rates. An Angus Stock Bull sold at £1350, but top price on the day at £1360 for a Black Limousin cross from JM Wilson & Son of Beckwithshaw. Cows levelled at £861 across the board.
Stores - The store cattle ring saw a much older demographic of cattle on the catalogue compared to previous weeks, which resulted in higher overall averages in both the bullocks and heifers.
Best strong cattle could still command over £1200 with a pen of three belting bullocks from P&E Fox of Clitheroe selling for £1250 and a pair of cracking Charollais heifers from Messrs Whiteley of Soyland selling for £1230 and £1210.
Native cattle were also out in good numbers with some fantastic groups of Bullocks being sold to heady prices. Top price was presented from Paul Drinkall of Gargrave again at £1250, £1240 £1235 for Angus with a couple of pens from Ashley and Rachel Caton, Otterburn selling for £1080 and £1025.
Younger, poorly conformed cattle would be unchanged in price compared to the last month with many selling for £650 - £850 however retail type cattle found a couple more supporters with many sweet heifers seeing themselves up to and past the £1000 barrier with Jonathon Townley of Clapham seeing a couple of his entries make £1190 and £1080.
Dairy bred bullocks were a cracking trade with Black & Whites averaging £830 topping at £920 from JR Taylor, Winterburn.
