A great day at Skipton today with a mart full of cattle and a buzz all sale long.
The feeding cattle in the bottom ring started with Young bulls and the strong square types were dearer on the fortnight with £1050 to £1150 common place, whilst the nice keeping bulls around 10-11mo were either side of £1000. Trade for the small long keep bulls was a back a tad though with buyers just appearing a bit more cautious than of late.
A large show of feeding cows attracted a strong ringside of 15 active buyers and trade would be just as sharp as the previous sale. A couple of cast bulls away to £1380, and the best feeding cows £1050 to £1200. The genuine ¾ bred grazing types for turning out £950 to £1100, with half bred cows £750 to £950.
We saw another strong turnout of store cattle for the fortnightly sale with just shy of 600 bullocks and heifers going through the bottom ring. Strong cattle on the whole would be a better trade throughout the day with arguably a better show of quality cattle on offer today. Best bullocks came from the Ellis Family of Addingham Moorside with there bullocks topping at £1280 and £1260 with Andrew Houseman of Darley seeing £1250 and £1230 for his consignments.
Cattle sold in bunches once again attracted more frantic bidding with groups of 4 from Naylor’s of Middleton, Ilkley seeing there runs of Simmental x or Bazadais x bullocks bred from god Holstein cows realise £1095 and £1050. A better number of dairy bullocks on offer today with Naylor’s again seeing the best of this at £990 for a brace and a run of 40 from Messrs Coup of Bolton By Bowland peaking at £840 for a pen of 10.
Younger, yearling cattle weren’t quite as potent this week compared to a fortnight ago, however retail types cattle still had a very good following, the best of the yearling cattle came from Richard Harker of Grayrigg who saw his 14mth old heifer sell to £1200 and another at £1120. 6- 13mth heifers averaged up respectably at just over £800 with their male counterparts averaging £875
Mid aged cattle 13-18mth found an unpredictable trade today with many commercial type cattle particularly coming of £20 - £40 less than a fornight previously.
The next fortnightly sale sees the final for pedigree bulls with closing fixture of the Spring Pedigree Sales with the Multi Breed Bull Sale being held in the top ring.
