Forward: 368 head of cattle

Bulls – a reflection of the current disappointing deadweight bull trade is an average of £891 for 11-12 month old bulls and a 6-10 month old average of £913. 450-500kg bulls when available were £1050 or thereabouts. Angus bulls with a sire are becoming an increasingly good trade.
Feeding Cows – a smaller entry of grazing cows today met with a good ringside of buyers and although trade was swift it was evident buyers were operating knowing the meat trade is under pressure, best end of cows into four figures J Baines, Gisburn sold a Limousin x at £1120 whilst R&B Nutter, Fence also achieved £1120 for a Limousin x. Several nice tight grazing types £810 to £950 and working cows in the 600-700s. Overall selling average £840. Next Sale Wednesday 3rd July. Entries to mart office.
Store Cattle - A smaller show of cattle as a result of the back to back sales we have held to get on the right week for the Great Yorkshire show. The impact of the price reductions across all Liveweight and Deadweight cattle producers was clear to see today. The positive sign today was that despite returns ever tightening still a healthy number of commercial and retail type buyers turned out to bid for cattle. A shortening in numbers today protected trade a little today however them strong cattle could still break the £1100 barrier, an example of this was David and Harry Coates of Coniston with a pen of 4 strong British Blue bullocks at £1115. Plenty of bullocks and heifers could break the £1000 especially those 16mth + cattle with some nice runs of dairy x beef bred cattle on the receiving end of some busy budding with Amy Beresford of Halton West seeing £1025 for a pen of cracking British Blue heifers, with a nice pen of 14 mth old Limousin’s from David and Will Towler of Grindleton.
Yearlings would see their trade slip the most on recent weeks alongside cattle turned in straight off grass. Little sweet retail cattle didn’t quite have the same potency a week ago with £700- £800 being the norm for sweet heifers. Plain 14-16mth heifers & bullocks, just lacking quality would also see the hammer fall at similar money.
A run of 8-12mth BB x Dairy bullocks and heifers from J Hoggarth of Slyne met a fierce trade for some hard & hairy growing cattle selling between £620 and £710 for pens of 5’s and 6’s.
