SKIPTON AUCTION MART
MARKET REPORT – WEDNESDAY 2020
Fortnightly Sale of Young Feeding Bulls, Store Bullocks & Heifers, Breeding Cattle
Forward: 497 head of cattle
Comprising: 497 Feeding Cattle (148 Young Bulls, 48 Beef Feeding Cows & Bulls, 279 Bullocks & Heifers) & 22 Breeding Cattle.
Feeding Bulls – another very good show for feeding bulls with 147 sold to average £1017 a reflection of the reducing number of spring born bulls in store rings and an improved finished price. Whilst heavy bulls were up, it was long keep bulls which proved the trade of the day with a lot between £950 and £1050.
Feeding Cows – a real injection into the feeding cow trade with a useful entry of cows with feed potential. Pick of the continental’s were all £1100 to £1470 with a number of lean first cross blues at £900-£950. Natives carrying finish were to £1125.
Stores - Strong feeding cattle saw trade dearer on the week with less strength forward and an active audience looking to fill up on both strong bullocks and heifers. There was a shortage of the very strongest cattle forward today with many farmers taking the option of turning cattle out ready for selling at the back-end months.
First of selling particularly well was the U grade over 20 month heifers selling to purchasers for both feeding and bulling. Top price heifer came from JR Lancaster at £1330 for a Lim, followed closely behind at £1300 for another Lim at 23 months coming from vendors Ellis Bros who then also sold the next highest price Heifer at £1290.
U Grade steers sold tremendous today to a very active audience looking for the best goods for feeding and supplying both mainstream abattoirs and small scale butchers around the UK. Top price steer £1300 from P+E Fox sold to £1300 for his 24 months old Blonde X, following closely behind at £1270 for a Bazadaise Steer from JE Naylor. Closely behind came a single Lim Steer at £1260 from AJ Shepherd. A packet of Lim steers also followed selling at £1175 from F Thomas & Son. Many more 20+month old cattle could have been sold to seller’s advantage today. The 46 Store Steers 18 month+ came to a pleasing average of £1050.
Limousin steers came to an overall breed average of £997. Looking very well sold with a range of ages in the mix today.
Native cattle sold tremendous with buyers out in force for both summering and feeding Angus and Herefords. Angus steers came to an average £925 with a top of £1090 from J Cheetham.
Black and Whites sold to a total breed average of £900. Cattle coming from both M Ryder & Sons and A.P Bullock sold packets of ranging from £985-£830. More of these well grown Black and Whites are required on a regular basis.
Grazing cattle once again selling away to an active audience with prices very similar on the fortnight. Steers up-to 12 Months sold to £1040 from JR Carr, Ilkley. The 12 months of age and under cattle sold to an average of £883. Heifer’s up-to 12 Months sold to an overall average of £821 for the 73 on offer. The range of prices from £560-£1100. Best cattle with the ends in them to make good retail products defiantly lead the trade today with buyers out to pay for quality.
