Forward: 550 head of cattle -
Comprising: 545 Feeding Cattle (30 Young Bulls, 40 Beef Feeding Cows, 475 Bullocks & Heifers) & 5 Breeding Cattle.
Feeding Bulls – a mixed show of feeding bulls on age. Under 12 months bulls in demand if strong and well-drawn, with most £1100 or more. Buyers more selective on bulls over 12 months which was anticipated in line with prime values.
Feeding Cows - a pure British Blue cow topped at £1680 with other heavy meated cows all £1000-£1230. A fair proportion of older worn, lean cows in the entry at the bottom end caused the average reduction on the fortnight. A 2012 Limousin cast bull made £950.
Stores – A large show with all classes of store cattle on sale today. Most goods similar trade to the last sale with less of the very strong bullocks and heifers in. Small long term cattle looked to sell well especially with the current straw prices with active buyers in the stands eager to buy smart goods to re sell as large cattle next year or keep all the way through. Native cattle perhaps in shorter supply with only 138 Native Beef and Dairy bred forward today, but buyers competing well for both Bullocks and heifers of all sizes/ ages. Strong Angus Bullocks sold to £1290 from Bargh Bros. Good framed Angus steers £1040-£1100 slightly leaner goods in the £900 region and some long term sorts £750-£800. Angus heifers keenly sort for with top price going to KM&L Throup at £1050. Size and meat selling at £920-£1050, slightly less finished goods from £850-£900. Long term Angus heifers with frame in the £700-£780 region with some smaller goods short of size below this mark which could have been picked up at handy money. Continental cattle sold well today with a few new faces for some 12-16 month old heifers. 48 Blue bullocks sold to an avg of £1029. Top price went to Bargh Bros yet again for some monster bullocks with weight and power at £1225 followed closely behind at £1200 for some real making bullocks again this time from RP Holt. Some dairy bred Blues from E&MA Burrow and N&J Thwaite both sold to £1190 for some usual well grown goods seen most fortnights from them. Most B Blues with the size and power sold from £1060 upwards with some just falling short of the mark that wouldn’t just have the size but would be equally as fleshy. 35 Blue heifers with the majority being dairy bred again like the bullocks. Janet E Sheard sold a suckler bred Heifer to a top price of the section at £1170 joint with RP Holt selling another suckler beast at the same price. Dairy bred goods either side of £1000 for size with some of the same class of goods selling up to £1095 from N&J Thwaite again. Lim heifers £1320 from V Farnell. Best goods £1180-£1300. Good runs of large suckler bred Limi’s going to regular purchasers buying to grow on for the live weight fat auction, with men here for all sizes of these good ended cattle with some smaller end cattle that would be long term selling at £880-£950. Then some grazing type limi’s selling from £750-£820. Weathered cattle of this description have took a drop in price especially with the current situation. 72 Lim steers sold again to regular purchasers with trade all round similar. Best ended cattle and short term goods all £1100+ selling to a top price of £1360 M Ryder. Some more long term goods but still size about the cattle could be picked up in the £980 region. And some smaller goods but not too weathered in the late £800s.
More cattle required next week especially Native cattle and short term continentals.
