Feeding Bulls
Prime bulls are returning well at the moment with 2019 spring born bulls beginning to dry up the opportunity of keeping pens full of in spec cattle was seized upon once again with a section average of £1143. £1400 was the target price today with Andy Rigby of Slaidburn with a couple at £1460 and £1400 and an exceptional bull from J&G Huck at £1420. It was mid range bulls where the lift is most noticeable with very few less than £1100 and the small bulls nicely over the £1000. A pen of Stabaliser crosses from CJ&JE Lumb made £1150 and Monbelliardes sold to £1050.
Feeding Cows - A very commercial show of cows today but no let up in trade. Angus cows grossing £1250 from J&JA Preston & Son of Stainforth, Blonde crosses to £1180 from JE Cowperthwaite, Eldroth and Salers to £1110 from AMS Robinson, Kendal. The medium fleshed cows were keenly contested with £900 to £1050 easily attained, whilst lighter and leaner cows were £740 to £880. Only 3 cows sold for under £740 all sale. Stores - Todays sale of store cattle saw a tremendous show of all classes coming through the sale ring. 44 Angus steers were forward with some amazing prices, the average for this section totalled at £1043 with top price coming from TM Harrison at £1410. With the other Natives 21 Hereford steers sold to £1140 N&J Thwaite and avg £916. Blue Bullocks tremendous to sell. Best sorts with weight £1200+ selling to a top of £1380 J Middleton Arncliffe, Blue Bullocks came to a section avg of £1108 which seemed unreal with plenty of young cattle in the avg aswell. JA&R Caton sold a run of Blue Bullocks 15-17 months of age selling 2 pens of matching bullocks at £1100 and £1060. A mixed show of Black and white Bullocks in todays sale, best sorts with weight selling to £960 with no monsters in the mix. Large framed bullocks £850+ with smaller narrower Black and Whites £550-£700. 54 Limi steers sold to a top price by regular vendor P&E Fox £1305 X2.
On a whole smaller grazing Bullocks sold just as strong as past weeks. Strong short-term cattle a lump dearer with active accounts ringside desperate to fill wagons and orders. More cattle needed for a fortnights time with strong cattle required in larger numbers.
Again, with the Natives 25 Angus Heifers sold to £1015 from M&SJ Winchester, Coniston Cold. Plenty of smaller Angus Heifers in todays sale with smallest selling either side of £650 to go back out to grass and mediums £780-£850 with lots of dairy bred Angus in this section. £900-£1015 for the largest through todays ring. Blue Heifers of all shapes and sizes in the ring today. Just the same as the Bullocks the largest quick short-term Cattle looked dearer on the week. £1230 J&G Huck sold a cracking shaped heifer fit to bull and also achieved second top price pf £1180 for another tremendous beast. 86 Limi Heifers sold today with regular vendor J Pickles selling to £1320 followed by J&G Huck at £1280 followed again closely behind by J Pickles at £1270. The 86 Limi Heifers sold avg 953 with smaller grazing 12-month sorts £680-£780 medium grazers £820-£900 and stronger cattle for feeding well up in the £1000 range with frame and size selling to a wide range of buyers coming for quality.
102 BREEDING CATTLE - An entry of exceptional cows and calves from Garrowby Estates created considerable interest at the fortnightly sale. The commercial herd comprising strong homebred Limousin and British Blue cows is a high health status herd and the cows sold with strong spring calves had run with the 10,000gn Limousin bull Tweeddale Oxygen. The sale topped out with a 2014 Limousin cow sold with her heifer calf which sold to John, Gill and James Huck of Hubberholme for £2600.
Also interest in the breeding bulls with Alan Twell of Donnington selling two 4 year old British Blue cross stock bulls one at £2750 and the other at £2300.
