STORE & BREEDING CATTLE - WEDNESDAY 9TH MAY 2018

Forward: 1,188 head of cattle Comprising: 239 Young Feeding Bulls, 44 Beef Feeding Cows, 713 Bullocks & Heifers, 23 Breeding Cattle & 89 Pedigree Cattle. A cracking show of young feeding bulls forward for sale and a strong line up of buyers ringside too. The best yearling bulls were keenly contested regularly selling for £1150 to a top of £1340 for a 12 month Limousin from A Lodge, Malham Moor. Andrew Bradley representing TH&K Wood, Birstwith sold yearlings at £1250 for a pen of 3, £1240 £1220 and 3 at £1190. Robert Davey from Eldroth, Mick Carr from Horton in Ribblesdale and John Greenhalgh of Bashall Eaves all had bulls at £1200 or more. There were 128 bulls aged 11-12 month old and they averaged £1039.84.

There were 68 Bulls in the entry at 10months and younger, topping at £1300 for a 10month old British Blue from T Robinson & Sons, Slaidburn. David White of Hebden followed at £1175, Greame Sztejnke from Eldroth topped his run at £1170 and Ian Moorhouse from Dacre £1150. The younger end of this age bracket (6-8mo) were keenly sought, nice shaped sorts £750-£850, as far as £900. 40 Bulls aged 13 months or more completed the line up, a few none farm assured mixed in there as well which would be over age before satisfying residency periods, but still best end £1150 to £1250.

Another good show of Beef Bred Feeding Cows saw an entry of 44 head average £943 each. The sale topped at £1630 for a pure bred Blue from Ken Gamble of Easingwold, followed at £1480 for Cast Blue Bull from R&VM Clarke of Cowling. Several over £1100, with other notable prices being £1320 from T&E Priestley, £1250 I Barrett & Son, £1240 G&R Bulmer & Son.
Second and Third quality leaner types were seen to be dearer than the previous sale as more customers in the market looking for cows to turn out to grass.

A large show of store cattle on offer today with a high percentage of grazing bullocks and heifers on offer.  Despite large numbers of younger cattle, overall they ended up a very handy right throughout the sale. Bullocks saw some strong bidding with under 12mth old steers to £1140 x2 from DI Holliday of Riverside and £1090 WB Woodsworth with an average of £880. 13-19mth Bullocks were into a high gear today also topping at £1245 & £1240 from Andrew Houseman of Darley and averaging £955, the older bullocks 19-25mths topped at £1240 but had a healthy average of £1025.

Heifers were a similar story.  Older heifers (19-25mth) commanded a good trade today with a cracker of a heifer from James Towler of Grindleton topping at £1250 and a age bracket average of £1010. It was however the young heifers under 12mths which saw a healthy trade for the large numbers on offer averaging £814 and topping with a sweet Limousin from Mick Carr, Horton in Ribblesdale topping at £1060.
