STORE CATTLE - WEDNESDAY 16TH SEPTEMBER 2020

Fortnightly Sale of Young Feeding Bulls, Store Bullocks & Heifers, Breeding Cattle Forward: 574 head of cattle Comprising: 565 Feeding Cattle (83 Young Bulls, 59 Beef Feeding Cows, 423 Bullocks & Heifers) & 9 Breeding Cattle.

83 Feeding Bulls – its time of year when the bull entry transitions from 2019 born cattle to 2020 spring born calves. As the juncture the last of the older cattle are generally of mixed quality and so any pens which were smart and able to finish in spec were very good to sell.

A good proportion of the entry were 9mos and under with a section average of £1010 and top of £1200. This year’s spring born calves need to be in forward condition.

59 Feeding Cows – strong continental cows maintained a value but a larger percentage of the first cross continentals, plains and light weight natives discounted the average to £847. Best of the first crosses still £1000 better beef cows £1200 and the bottom plain cows £550.

423 Stores - No let up in cattle trade today at Skipton as another decent show of feeding cattle was presented for sale at Skipton Mart for our fortnightly sale. With prime clean cattle trade still striding on, the short keep cattle of all classes were keenly contested as usual with some excellent prices achieved. Older bullocks 16mo plus peaked at £1375 form P&E Fox Clitheroe, closely followed at £1310 by GD&A Midgley Luddendenfoot. Bullocks just over a year old sold to £1240 from J Lord Littleborough and £1100 G Sunderland Cragg Vale, whilst those under 12 months were a good trade, selling up to £1100 from E&M Townley Clapham, and £1000 from D&J Carlisle Cracoe. The better bullocks for 10mo to 14mo usually around £1000/£1100, with longer keep types £850/£930. The stronger bullocks on the day £1100-£1200.

Heifers were equal in demand to the bullocks, if not better! The older bracket of heifers (16mo+) had sales at £1430 from Fairplace Farm, Cowling and £1400 £1380 from JW Stockdale & Son, Burnsall, and £1360 BL&R Lund Hebden Bridge. Anything with quality generally being £1150 upwards, decent sorts £1000/£1100, longer keep £900s.
Heifers 12mo-15mo did not disappoint, three North Craven were to the fore with JE Cowperthwaite Eldroth topping at £1300, whilst JE Beresford Ribblehead and Mason & Gardner Chapel Le Dale both achieving £1200. In the middle at £1250 was K Lister & Son Kettlewell and £1240 form BL&R Lund in Hebden Bridge. Plenty of nice sorts £1000 plus, with longer keep commercial sorts £850/£1000. This age bracket averaged £1032.
Under 12 months heifer also hitting three figures at £1050 from R Naylor Ilkley and £1020 from another North Craven Vendor JC Nelson & Son, Clapham.
No shortage of Native and Dairy sired cattle today with 127 head swelling the entry. Angus cattle making up the most part of these with prices up to £1200 for heifers form F Thomas & Son Cowling, and strong Black & Whites up to £1040 for a pen of 4 from Bargh Bros from Bracewell.

Cattle sales are every fortnight and next sale on Wednesday 30th September we will hold our early Autumn sale of Native Beef and Dairy Sired Bullocks & Heifers in conjunction with our regular sale. All classes are required with buyers remaining keen to keep sheds topped up in response to the recent strong prime trade.

** A note for our customers on sale days **
Sale days are continuing to work well throughout the pandemic and all of us at CCM Skipton extend our thanks to all customers for their efforts and patience at this time, we are grateful that the mart has been unbelievably busy and that prices achieved at sale have clearly shown the benefit of the live auction system across all sectors. There is a lot of work that has been transferred to office and yard staff as a response to this, and so we ask that all vendors complete the relevant entry form for each section with instructions for how stock is to be sold, in addition, luck instructions must be completed on this form as well for the auctioneers clerk to deduct at the time of sale, luck will not be deducted from the office after sale. Once you have completed your entry form and handed it in with licences/passports on arrival, we will endeavor to follow your instructions in all cases, although, if possible it would greatly assist us if you would sort stock into sale order in pre-sale pens before sale so that staff can easily follow your instructions immediately prior to the sale ring. For any details please do not hesitate to contact Ted Ogden.
