Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Hoggs & Breeding Sheep
Forward: 1146 Head,
943 Store Hoggs – Overall av £77.15. 189 Breeding Sheep. 14 Blue Faced Leicester Females.
A good sale today with Store lambs in very strong demand. Continental and down cross lambs for short keep were very good to sell on the back of the quickly increasing prime sheep prices seen in the live marts. Leading the continental prices were Martin and Val Brown of Leyburn with a pen of Beltex crosses at £116 each, then £107 for Suffolks from Michael Harker of Wycollar with Matt Thornber of Clitheroe close behind at £106. 5 other pens making 3 figure prices and the reminder of stronger lambs on the day generally late 380s and in the 90’s. Mules were good to sell, topping £90 from Jack wade, and averaging over £80. Horned lambs found a ready enquiry, best pens £70 plus, mediums types late 50’s and 60’s, small end £30’s and 40’s, whilst some nice runs of Cheviot lambs averaged £80. Horned feeding ewes sold to £51.
A good interest in inlamb ewes with a run of correct Mules ranging from £145 to £120, Continental and Suffolk sheep in the £120’s and £130’s, whilst some South Country Cheviot sheep scanned Singles in the £70’s and £80’s.
The Winter sale of Blue Faced Leicester females brought a select entry from good local breeders with excellent crossing lines. Taking the championship was John Mason of Oddacres when his Micklaw sired gimmer hogg took the eye of show judge Ashley Caton. It later sold for £450 to JR Lancaster in Bordley. Top of the shop price wise was Kevin Wilson of Blubberhouses with his F1 Big head sired Gimmer hogg selling at £550 to Mrs J Pennell of Darlington.
