Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Lambs.
Forward: 9,014 Head, Overall av £81.56
Wednesday was another busy day at CCM, and so far this week has seen us sell just shy of 20,000 sheep between Monday Tuesday and Wednesday. A cracking trade with the store lambs today with some fresh faces ringside, and a very large contingent of buyers from Wales and Border Counties. All classes had a range of buyers out in force with trade dearer on the fortnight. Mule Lambs sold very well with top prices paid of £80 and a mule wether avg of £70 for nearly 2,000 head sold. More buyers out this week to purchase white faced lambs to sell back through the live sale ring. £68-£74 for crossed lambs for long-medium keep. Short term lambs £78-£84. Better bred lambs sold with a premium of £78-£82 for long-medium term Texel/beltex and short term beltex £84-£94. With some premium prices paid for the best. 304 Cheviots sold to a top of £79.50 and a breed avg of £68. Smaller end Cheviots could be picked up from £61-£68 and short-term cheviots carrying weight and flesh mid to high £70’s. Nicely grown fit Swale lambs straight from the fell mainly round the £40-£50 mark. End of April-May born Tex-dale lambs £60-£64.
Todays sale also included the 1st Sale for Top Draw Suffolk Mule & Continental Cross Gimmer Lambs with over 3,400 catalogued for sale attracting a large contingent of Welsh and Southern England buyers. A few show pens £150 plus, Kenneth Gamble leading the sale at £180 twice, and Owain Chapmans champion pen making £175. Plenty of the strong first crossed Suffolk & Texel Lambs £100- £120, a few best pens from AL Dean & Son up to £128, whilst the Edington Family from Bell Busk also made £125 of a pen. Next grade of Gimmer lambs £88 to £98. SL&SD Lund took first prize Suffolk Mule Gimmer Lambs and made £120, a price equalled by Robert Metcalfe of Brearton with his second prize pen, and a third time by Kevin Marshall of Darley with his top pen. To gain these premiums lambs need to be well grown, with clean heads and good skins, otherwise they are better left as mixed pens of store lambs with the wethers. 2nd sale in a fortnights time where there will be approx. another 2000 head.
