Plenty of late Autumn grass and a timely lift in prime sheep prices together with a large company of southern based buyers helped to raise store sheep trade by some £3 to £5 per head today, when good entry ofover 6000 sheep were forward for the early November sale of Store & Breeding Sheep.
Store lambs still forward in good numbers and the trade was strong. Suffolk & Texel Lambs averaged over £60, whilst any smart Beltex types raced away up to near £70. The Mule Wethers, as is customary at Skipton, were keenly contested with 1,670 head averaging £58.36 (+£3 on last fortnight). Some notable large lots of Mules sold top side of £60, but James Hall of Darnbrook selling the 2nd lot of the day, 104 head at £64.50 per head was one of the high points, others saw Tom Kitching selling 24 at £66.50, and Mark Nelson 50 head at £65.50. A large selection of horned lambs was forward again for sale, Best end around £50 with averages of £46 for Dalesbred and £42 for Swales.
In the Breeding Sheep section there was a good entry including some 824 Mule lambs for the 5th sale of the Autumn, and these averaged £81.89 per head (+£10.10p per head). Swaledale Gimmer lambs also received a good enquiry whilst quality ewes and rams also sold reasonably well.
