DAIRY PRESS - MONDAY 8TH FEBRUARY 2016

Peter Baul sparkles again at Craven Dairy Auction Peter Baul’s Ravensgate pedigree Holstein herd bagged its second Craven Dairy Auction championship of the year at the opening February show at Skipton Auction Mart. (Mon, Feb 8) Mr Baul, who trades as M Baul & Partners at Watergate Farm, Bishop Thornton, was Skipton’s opening 2016 dairy show title winner and reserve champion at the second show, also landing a hat-trick of championships and other top price successes in 2015.

Craven Dairy Auction (27 head) Todays dairy sale went better than expected with a busy ringside but with many having a strict price in mind. Pre Sale winner was a 29 litre heifer from Mark Houseman of Burton Leonard which went on to make £1520, with Peter Baul’s Reserve Champion selling for £1500 and Robin Jenning’s 36L heifer selling at £1480. Robert Butterfields Bull got away at £1200 with Incalf and Maiden cattle receiving a handy trade against the fresh calved trade.

Rearing Calves to £370 B&W av £79 Cont av £298.2 Native av £180.8 Black and whites were certainly good to sell with a handy trade throughout the sale with Limousin’s also on the end of a better trade. Other continentals a touch easier in places although a strong calf from Jonny Moon of Wigglesworth went on to top the day at £370 for a sweet British Blue Bull.

CALF SHOW - MONDAY 4TH JANUARY 2016

Rearing Calves to £400 (123) B&W av £74.29 Cont av £311.9 Native av £194.8 A strong show of calves for the New Year Show and Sale with Joe Ogden of Cowling Judging the pre sale show. Through the ring Hartley’s of Bolton Abbey took the top price of £400 with a big british blue bull. Fred Houseman of Church Farm Enterprises chased close behind with another run of quality calves topping at £395. No storming record breakers this time but a strong trade right through the sale made for some healthy averages for the 123 on offer.

DAIRY CATTLE - MONDAY 14TH DECEMBER 2015

Rearing Calves to £430 (92) B&W av £67 Cont av £306 Native av £186.57 A decent show of calves received a straight trade right through the sale with the best calves forging a strong trade. Black and Whites held back by some plain calves right the way through the sale with plenty handy goods above £100’s. Continentals were still good to sell with three full trailers of calves receiving a fair trade for their consignments. NB there is a calf sale next week on the 21st with a usual consignment expected then there is no sale until the 4th of January.

Stainbank herd secures seventh Skipton dairy title of the year Robin Jennings, who runs the Stainbank pedigree Holstein dairy herd at Hill House Farm, South Stainley, rattled up his seventh championship success of the year at the final Craven Dairy Auction show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart. (Mon, Dec 14) In doing so, he became 2015’s most prolific title winner, including a remarkable run of five successive championships over the summer months.

CHRISTMAS CALF SHOW - MONDAY 30TH NOVEMBER

Rearing Calves to £660 (91) B&W av £81.42 Cont av £369.43 Native av £221.65 A superb show of calves met by a strong trade with a number of high prices right through the sale. The Christmas presale show was kindly judged by ringside regular Paul Drinkall and found a fine British Blue bull calf from Shaun and Peter Sowray to be champion and went on to be the day’s top price at £660 with another noted price of £600 for the first calf in the ring. With strong prices made by other regular vendors helping British Blue bulls to an average of £434.17 and Continental average of £369.43.

DAIRY CHRISTMAS SHOW - MONDAY 23RD NOVEMBER 2015

Craven Dairy Auction (56 head) A handy show of dairy cattle for the Christmas Show with Peter Baul of Bishop Thornton taking the top honours with his Pedigree heifer that had been calved 28 days and giving 32 Litres. Judge Helen Herd found this to be her favourite and rightly so selling to the days top price of £2000. The Baul family also took Reserve Champion with his second heifer and reached joint second highest price of £1850 and joined Roger Naylor of Langbar.

CALVES - MONDAY 16TH NOVEMBER 2015

Rearing Calves to £460 B&W av £71.47 Cont av £358.46 Native av £163.44 78 calves on offer today with most goods a very similar trade to last week however good continentals were in fine form with a number of buyers competing for the best goods. Alf and Andrew Townsend topped with their fantastic British Blue bull at £460 with British Blue bulls averaging an impressive £394. Black and whites were topped by Michael Heron of Bramhope at £135 with all heifers topped by Church Farm Enterprises at £400.

Rearing Calves to £400 (61) B&W av £70.32 Cont av £325.64 Native av £234 Struart Petty of Draughton took the top price of £400 with his fine British Blue bull with all blue bulls averaging £330. Blue heifers were a touch easier with arguably not the sweetest of calves on show averaging £272. Good show right through the black and whites with only an odd bobby calf simmering the average to a respectable £70.32. Always worth remembering the average age of our calves when comparing prices with Black and White calves 41.2 days old on average and Continentals 44.4 days.

Smellows heifer champion at Craven Dairy Auction Local dairy farmer Jeremy Taylor, who runs the Smellows pedigree Holstein Friesian herd at Small House, Broughton, sent out the first prize newly calven home-bred heifer and overall show champion at Skipton Auction Mart’s opening November Craven Dairy Auction.

Rearing Calves to £390 (66) B&W av £84.34 Cont av £304.2 Native av £277.19 Strong numbers of dairy calves forward this morning with B&W and MRI’s taking up 60% of the sale. Black and whites were certainly healthier with the best nicely into the early £100’s with competition strong for commercial types making a healthy average. Best blues from Geoff and Margaret Booth topped the continentals at £390 for a strong blue bull.

69 Rearing Calves to £460 B&W av £71.87 Cont av £341.76 Native av £311.4 David Smith of Bents Farm, Sutton In Craven took the top honours at the Autumn Show and Sale of Calves. With a strong show of top end calves Richard Umpleby’s job was not easy, with some deliberation the sweet 5 ½ week old calf from the Smith family took his eye and took the top rosette and went to the day’s top price of £460.

Craven Dairy Auction (34 head) A straight run of 34 dairy cattle in the market today with 13 in milk and 21 Youngstock. Despite the small show of milk today enough buyers were present to make them a handy trade with regular Robin Jennings of South Stainley taking the top honours and top price today at £1850 for his 2nd prize heifer. Brian Moorhouse of Hesper Farm took the Reserve Champion position with a 2nd Calver from his pedigree Aireburn Herd selling to the highest cow price of £1650. Ian Parkinson of Barden also received a good trade with his two home bred cows selling at £1400 and £1500 respectively.

Rearing Calves to £430 (101) B&W av £68.41 Cont av £325.5 Native av £232 101 calves forward today with trade a touch easier with larger numbers coming forward. Continental heifers would see the most buoyant trade with a number of heifer buyers charging each other for the better end of calves. Dairy bred would remain similar on the week with plane calves looking as dear as anything. £430 stopped the best calf today from Fred Houseman with Colin Whitelock the best of the rest in the bulls at £400 and Richard Sutcliffe topping the heifers at £410. Numbers still in demand with arable buyers returning steadily after a slow drilling.
