Sammy Sudgen dairy champion at Skipton While the fortnightly Craven Dairy Auction show and sale attracted a small turnout of newly calven heifers, these proved in ready demand at the ringside. (Mon, Apr 23) Champion was Sammy Sugden, who runs the Brontemoor pedigree herd at Dobfield Farm, Laycock, with her home-bred 18 days calved 28-litre heifer Brontemoor Zebra Sooty, by the Genus sire, Lynncrest Zebra, out of Grinkle Rollsroyce Sooty, which also headed the prices at £1,980 when claimed by regular dairy buyer Richard Sutcliffe, of Queensbury

Rearing Calves to £450 B&W av £59 Cont av £341 Native av £320 Well it seemed only british blues were on the menu this morning with 90% of the calves British blue on the passports. Top price calf of the day was the first one in the ring from John and Rob Marshall of Dacre when it sold for £450, Martyn Jennings of Cowling was next in line with another cracker at £430. British blue heifers averaged £280 however topped at £350 for an entry from Church Farm Enterprises and £330 for another strong calf from Martyn Jennings.

Stainbank double at Craven Dairy Auction The Stainbank pedigree Holstein Friesian dairy herd run by Robin Jennings at Hill House Farm, South Stainley, Ripon, secured its second Craven Dairy Auction championship of 2018 at Skipton Auction Mart’s opening April show and sale, also adding the reserve championship for good measure. Colin Whitelock calf champion as new Skipton sales ring is launched Skipton Auction Mart’s brand-new rearing calf sales ring was packed to the rafters for the first-ever sale in the new facility on a snowy bank holiday Monday Easter. (April 2) Known as the Stirton Ring, it forms part of the impressive new sales ring complex in the heart of the mart. There is also a new standalone sheep sales ring, which was also used for the first time on Monday.

Craven Dairy Auction (7 head) Mark Smith took the top honours in the dairy sale today with a cracking home bred heifer giving 32kg selling to John Howard of Heslaker Farm, Skipton for £2000. The 2nd prize heifer from the Newbirks herd of David, Claire and Suzy Lawson which was calved 10 days and 31 litres and sold to Ken Throup of Woofa Bank Farm, Silsden Moor for £1950. Despite being light on numbers a handy contingent of buyers was ringside for the milkers on offer.

Roles reversed at latest Craven Dairy Auction Principal honours were reversed at the second March Craven Dairy Auction show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart, on Monday, March 26, when Mark Smith, of Rookery Farm, Winterburn, won the championship and the Lawson family, from Mill Farm, Arthington, the reserve championship.

Rearing Calves to £460 B&W av £69.80 Cont av £333.48 Native av £203.33 Decent show of calves this morning with 75 landing through the door in total. A cracking buzz meant for a healthy trade with best continental bulls and heifers selling well with Graham Hayton topping at £460 for a Lim x bull with 19 British Blue bulls averaging £349 and topping at £420 twice for entries from Colin Whitelock, Gargrave and another from Church Farm Enterprises, Burton Leonard. Good heifers got away to a ready trade with Colin Whitelock again topping proceedings at £420 for a cracking Limousin cross heifer with 16 blue heifers averaging £330 and peaking at £390 and £380 twice from Church Farm Enterprises.

Newbirks herd bags another Craven Dairy Auction championship The Wharfedale-based Newbirks pedigree Holstein Friesian dairy herd of father and daughter, David and Suzy Lawson, picked up its second Craven Dairy Auction championship of the year at the opening March sale at Skipton Auction Mart. (Mon, March 12)

Rearing Calves to £410 x2 (91) B&W av £68.15 Cont av £306.35 Native av £202.5 A large show of calves on offer today but not quite as strong as trade as previous weeks with the cold weather holding a couple of buyers back today, however on the whole calves sold away nicely. A run of strong blues from JR&MJ Moon of Wigglesworth sold to £410 twice. The Blue heifers were not quite as potent today, however Houseman’s of Church Farm Enterprises managed £380 three times for some 5 week old heifers and GCL Stephenson made £340 with a lovely 4 week old heifer. Despite a limited number of buyers on black and white calves today trade was brisk with the better end topping out at £145 for a consignment from Chadwick and Leaver of Southfield, Burnley with an average for all entrants of £68.15.

Rearing Calves to £500 B&W av £60.74 Cont av £374 Native av £216.31 Spring calf show and what a trade shame we just didn’t have more calves through the door. Pre Sale Champion went to a tremendous suckler bred limousin heifer from D&J Carlisle of Cracoe which sold for the top price of £500. The Reserve Champion a cracker of a bull from regular vendor Shaun Sowray of Sowray Bros, Bishop Thornton reached £440 with all his bulls averaging £433. Limousin bulls saw a strong trade with both Hayton & Stocks and Sowray Bros breaking £400 at £460 and £420 respectively. However it’s the heifers which seem to be dearer than any other centres at the minute with British Blues on average £40-£60/ head above that of other centres with 11 British blue heifers averaging £338.

Cracking Carlisle Cracoe calf clinches championship and top call at Skipton A Limousin youngster eclipsed the British Blues for a change at Skipton Auction Mart’s Spring rearing calf show and sale, on Monday, February 19. The home-bred heifer, just one month and one day old, secured a first-ever calf championship at the venue for Tom Carlisle, who farms with his father John at Coxons Farm, Cracoe.

Craven Dairy Auction (14 head) A good trade was had in the dairy ring this morning with the pre-sale show being judged kindly by Brian Blezard of Ribchester. The 1st Prize Heifer and Champion consigned by J Caygill & Partners of Rylstone, went on to take the championship with a 28 litre pedigree heifer that had been calved 9 days. A lovely wearing heifer with a cracking udder was hard bid for and was eventually knocked down to AG Parker of Emley for £2050. The second prize heifer from R&E Butterfield of Bentham, giving 26kg had a strong following also which quickly reached £1820 and went home with Mark Goodall of Tong.
