John Stott Jnr claims 700gns to price at 2018 Skipton Charollais rams showcase Cumbrian Charollais sheep breeder John Stott Jnr, who runs the Kingsland pedigree flock in Crosscrake, Stainton, near Kendal, claimed top price of 700gns at the British Charollais Sheep Society’s annual show and sale of commercial rams at Skipton Auction Mart. (Tues, Sept 18) He achieved it with a home-bred shearling ram, one of February, 2017, born twins by a sire from the Marwood family’s renowned Foulrice flock, himself by the highly regarded Marwood tup, Dalby Mount Aloe. The top price performer was claimed by J Riley & Son, of Castleford.

Hull House Texel dispersal produces 8,000gns top price A top call of 8,000gns (£8,400) was the highlight of some standout prices achieved at a major dispersal sale staged on behalf of the Mellin family’s Hellifield-based Hull House Texel flock at Skipton Auction Mart. (Sat, Sept 15)

RARE BREEDS The rare breed sale at Craven Cattle Marts at Skipton Auction Mart was once again well supported, with a wide variety of sheep up for grabs at this sale. David and Kath Wilson of Crimple head kindly donated a Teeswater Shearling Gimmer to be auctioned for Parkinsons UK charity. The gimmer made £120 and was bought by Mr Sleightholme. Top price today came from Mr D Booth 240gns. Full report below.

Ribble Aberdeen-Angus herd Open Day success An open day at Windy Pike Farm, Gisburn, ahead of this coming Saturday’s major sale at Skipton Auction Mart of the entire Ribble Aberdeen-Angus herd from Henry Rowntree, of Rowntree Farms, proved a resounding success. Some 80 Angus breeders viewed a great show of productive cattle. Also meeting interested parties inspecting the cattle before the dispersal sale at Skipton, on Saturday, September 22, were David Leggat, from United Auctions, Craven Cattle Marts’ general manager Jeremy Eaton and Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society chief, Barrie Turner.

ANNUAL SALE OF JACOB SHEEP A quite exceptional day of trading at the 43rd Jacob Sheep Society Sale held at Skipton with the breed record price beaten twice and record prices achieved for both male and female sections. It was the ‘Pentretenant’ flock of Mrs DJ Price which took the headlines with their first prize ram lamb a ‘Blackbrook Fire Balls’ grandson bred from their homebred ‘Hope Flash Lad’ bred ewe which with a reserve male championship from the 2018 Royal Welsh Show, and the day’s Skipton Reserve Championship, joined a Scottish consortium for 4600gns.

ANNUAL SALE OF WENSLEYDALE SHEEP At the 127th Annual Show and Sale of Wensleydale Longwool Sheep held on behalf of the Wensleydale Longwool Sheepbreeders Association a shearling ram from the ‘Nipna’ flock of Mrs J Pennell of Redworth won the Championship and commanded the top price of the day. Bred from a ‘Providence Pete’ bred ‘West End’ ewe the ‘Nosterfield Supreme’son had previously won the shearling class at the 2018 Great Yorkshire Show after his success today soon found a ready home with N Hodkinson of Commonside for 560gns.

2nd Annual Dales Blue Sale of Blue Texel & Blue Texel X Rams and Females The 2nd Annual Sale of Blue Texels saw 70 sheep go under the hammer in the craven ring this morning with what seemed like a quiet ringside, however, the people who were there were there to buy. Top call of the day went to Tom Barley for a cracking Blue Texel Ram Lamb selling for 320gns.

(Friday, August 31) Taking the supreme championship following the long journey north to exhibit at the North Yorkshire venue for the first time was the first prize shearling ram and male champion from Norfolk’s Andrew Jones and his two daughters, 21-year-old Eleanor, and Annabel, 18, who run the Morley flock at Morley St Botolph, Wymondham.

Simpson Blue bull charges to 4,900gns top price at Skipton Seven pedigree and pure-bred bulls featured among the turnout at Skipton Auction Mart’s latest fortnightly Wednesday cattle sale. It was a five-year-old British Blue from Bernard Simpson, of Pateley Bridge, that proved the real eye-catcher when selling locally for 4,900gns to Frankland Farms in Rathmell.

The Craven Limousin Day produced one of the best sales to date with a100% clearance of Intermediate Bulls ranging in price from 2700gns to 5000gns. Senior bulls reflected the same demand from buyers for strong bulls ready for work with just one failing to find a new home and a price range of 2300gns to 5000gns. With 4 Junior bull classes in the show and a large entry of 26 cattle buyers enjoyed choice and the section returned an 85% clearance rate with prices from 1500gns to 8500gns.
