STORE HOGGS & BREEDING SHEEP - WEDNESDAY 15TH JANUARY 2020

Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Lambs. Forward: 2,374 Head, Overall av £69.36. A large entry of lambs for the New Year Sale and a flying trade today with buyers coming from all over to keep stocked up with the current demand for fat lambs holding up.

STORE LAMBS - WEDNESDAY 11TH DECEMBER 2019

Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Lambs, Feeding and Breeding Sheep Forward: 3,143 Head (Overall av £63.12) A Cracking trade throughout for the store lambs which saw vendors tail end lambs making just as much as their 2nd draws in previous months. An overall average of £63.12 was seen in the ring today including large runs of late season type and hill bred lambs. Continentals with frame and size getting away at £65-£73 whilst the pure bred smallest sorts getting to the same money. Better Bred large sorts getting into the 80’s to top at £95 from P Johnson. Medium Suffolks selling £60+ with the smalls mid £50s.

STORE LAMBS - WEDNESDAY 27TH NOVEMBER 2019

Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Lambs, Feeding Ewes & Breeding Sheep Forward: 4909 Head, Comprising 4,681 Store Lambs (av £60.79) and 308 Ewes, Rams and Gimmer Lambs. A very good show of lambs today with trade very similar to last fortnight. More weathered lambs in today’s sale with more long keep lambs too. Strong first cross lambs around the £70 mark with some cracking Beltex lambs selling for £80-£96. Horned lambs were also good to sell, best end making either side of £50 into mid £40s with the next grade down £30-£40. Dalesbred lambs selling well with a top price of £49 from JA Stoney & Son for a pen of tups.

Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Lambs, Feeding Ewes & Breeding Sheep Forward: 5,574 Head, Comprising 4,854 Store Lambs (av £63.18) and 720 Ewes, Rams and Gimmer Lambs. A great sale at CCM Skipton on Wednesday with trade on a high note following the rise in prime lamb trade, and there was a sale average for 4,854 Store Lambs of £63.18 per head. Good lambs for short to medium keep were in high demand, and Mule/Masham Wethers were especially good to sell with strongest end in the £70’s up to £75.50, Mules av £64.58 and Mashams £68.27.

STORE LAMBS - WEDNESDAY 31ST OCTOBER 2019

Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Lambs. Forward: 6496 Head (Overall av. £56.38). A very useful entry with 883 Horned and 2027 Mule and Masham lambs sold in the entry of 6496 with 48 separate buyers represented at the ringside. First cross Texel and Suffolk lambs worked into a very good trade with strong lambs generally £65-£75 and wintering lambs not far behind at £55-£65. Strong end of the Mules £62-£66 and the horned lambs a similar trade to last fortnight although the run was not as strong with less meat in the mix. Top end Beltex lambs continue to find favour with numerous bidders with an average of £70.58 and lambs both short and long keep comfortably into £70 all day.

Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Lambs Forward: 7455 Head, Overall av £55.56 Store Lambs would get away reasonably well today with a decent ringside of buyers all sale looking to secure sheep. Lowland lambs were a mixed selection, smart Beltex types in the 70’s and 80’s topping £86.50 from T&C Robinson of Tosside, and £86 from Frankland Farms in Rathmell.

Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Lambs Forward: 7,091 Head, Overall av £58.52 Another healthy show of lambs for todays Store lamb sale with again over 7,000 lambs going under the hammer. Today’s sale included the annual show and sale of horned wether and hill lambs which found the Newbould family of Dallowgill coming out victorious with there strong Swale wether lambs selling for £43 and heading to wales with a Swaledale wether average of £34.73. Westalls presented the first prize hill lambs with their pen of Cheviot lambs selling for £52.

Wether lambs take centre stage at CCM Skipton This year’s wether lambs took centre stage at Skipton Auction Mart for their main show day of the year, with four classes for Swaledale, Dalesbred and other hill breeds. (Wed, Sept 18) Successful in the Swaledale show class was upland hill custodian Paul Newbould, of Potter Lane Farm, Dallowgill, with a pen of 50 lambs reared entirely on heather moorland in the Nidderdale Area of Natural Beauty. Mr Newbould keeps some 800 ewes, which go to both pedigree Swaledale and Bluefaced Leicester rams, the latter servicing the requirements of his North of England Mule flock. The class victors sold at a section-topping £43 per head to a regular Welsh buyer.

Chapman Continentals champions at last at Skipton gimmer lamb showcase Dales sheep farmer Owain Chapman achieved his first major success at his local Skipton Auction Mart when consigning the first prize Continental pen at the latest fortnightly Wednesday store lamb fixture. (Wed, Sept 4) Mr Chapman, who farms with his partner Jenny Dolphin at Inmans Farm, Skyreholme, said he had been trying for seven or eight years to win the annual gimmer lamb showcase and while having picked up tickets in the past this was his first triumph.

,000-plus Skipton store lambs achieve total clearance Total clearance was achieved for the huge and much increased entry on the year of 8,188 store lambs on offer at Skipton Auction Mart’s latest fortnightly Wednesday sale. They sold to an overall average of £58.30 per head, an increase of £3 -£4 each on the 6,357 lambs sold last year. (2019 - Wed, Aug 21) Short keep lowland lambs were keenly contested all sale long, with Suffolk and Continental crosses making from the mid £60s to early £70s, with the better smart, but smaller Beltex sorts selling from £70 to £80.

Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Lambs & Breeding Sheep Forward: 7,079 Head: (6,598 Store Lambs and 481 Breeding Sheep) Overall Store Lamb av £58.41 *** 6,598 Store lambs through the ring this morning resulted in almost the same average as last fortnight of £58.41. Strong lambs were a nice trade as a result of the improved prime price seen this week with a number of fleshy pens in the £70 bracket.

Monyash teenager crowned champion at Skipton Beltex lambs highlight An up-and-coming 15-year-old pedigree sheep breeder from Derbyshire was crowned champion at Skipton Auction Mart’s annual show and sale for Beltex-cross lambs. (Wed, August 7) Owen Wells, from Monyash, who took the title with his 26-strong pen, was just 11 when he first established his own Barley Close pedigree Beltex flock in 2015 with two ewe lambs bought as a Christmas present by his parents, Steven and Steph Wells, who farm at One Ash Grange.
