A decent November show of cattle with quality sorts a very good trade. Strong Bulls good to sell, Messrs Gornall of Croft House, which is right at the top of Dent Dale, topped the section at £1290 with a 13 month Lim Bull. Those rising a year old weren’t too far behind with Messrs Wilkinson of Out Rawcliffe had a great run of Blue bred bulls at 11-12mo from £11990 up to £1280. James Huck of Sowerthwaite, Austwick had a great run of 8-9month old Limousin and Blonde crosses the two best at £1250 £1240 and others at 1200.

A mixed show of cattle for a late Autumn sale met with a large company of buyers who were a little more cautious than of late. A shortage of stronger cattle were generally good to sell, as were smart younger cattle, but 2nd & 3rd quality sorts were cheaper.

Huck family claim Skipton suckled calves championship At Skipton Auction Mart’s annual autumn highlight for this year’s crop of suckled calves and over year store cattle with show potential, Austwick mother and son, Janet and James Huck, presented both the champion and reserve in the 2016-born suckled calf show class. (Wed, Oct 26) The champion was a Blonde heifer, out of a three-quarter Limousin cow, sired by Shapfell Esquire, which made £1,240 when selling to Thomson Bros, of Pickering. The Hucks’ reserve champion, another Blonde, sold for £1,180 to Edwards Farm Butchers in Burnley.

Strong bulls received plenty of attention with best £1,150 plus up to £1,340 for a cracker from Ben Townsend of Laneshawbridge. In the Store Section, quality of any age sold very well, but a plainer commercial quality type beast was a shade harder to sell. (Beef breeding report below)

Forward: 635 head of cattle Comprising: 70 Young Feeding Bulls, 522 Bullocks & Heifers, 15 Feeding Cows & 28 Breeding Cattle 635 cattle forward today with a again a strong number forward of Bullocks and Heifers forward today with young bullocks in particular receiving a good trade right through the sale. Alan Twell saw a fierce trade for his pen of 37 freshly weaned bullocks and heifers with John Lord of Heights farm also seeing some high prices for his 14-15mth old bullocks.

Strong cattle were a sharp trade with Bullocks and short keep heifers especially good to sell. Smart younger cattle also holding value, whilst a few harder sorts were a shade easier.

Young Bulls started the sale with 8 of the 59 entries topping £1,200, topping at £1,400. The average across the board was £985.

Fortnightly Sale of Young Feeding Bulls, Store Bullocks & Heifers, Breeding Cattle Forward: 399 head of cattle Comprising: 76 Young Feeding Bulls, 6 Feeding Cows, 289 Bullocks & Heifers & 28 Breeding Cattle CCM Conducted their fortnightly cattle sale at Skipton on Wednesday where a bumper summer sale entry of nearly 400 head were forward for sale. The morning saw young bulls set off at a fair rate recording an overall average of £1,025 for all sold, Ian Pratt of Erringdon once again led the market prices with two strong Limousin crosses at £1,270 and £1,250. A mixed bag of feeding cows this week from a nice Blonde topping at £910 down to a lightweight older Angus at £340, plenty of buyers for Beef Bred cows and this section is a good place to sell genuine feeding cows alongside good fleshy types.

Young Bull trade was just up a notch with a top of £1,290 for a 13 month Blue cross from Messrs Lodge of Westside House, Malham Moor, closely followed at £1,280 for 13month Limousin cross from Jimmy Baines of Trawden who also sold a 12month old Blue cross at £1,200. Strong bulls continued a good trade all sale long with Robert Wade of Connonley making £1,260 and £1,200 of 12month old Limousin crosses.
