MARKET REPORT - MONDAY 9TH SEPTEMBER 2019

Forward: 63 Prime cattle comprising 14 Clean Cattle (under 30 mos), 9 Clean Cattle (over 30 mos) & 40 Cast Cattle. 3,590 Prime Sheep comprising 3057 Spring Lamb, 533 Cast Sheep (530 Ewes, 3 Rams). 106 Rearing Calves. 12 Dairy Cattle.

DAIRY & CALVES - MONDAY 9TH SEPTEMBER 2019

Craven Dairy Auction (14 head) A handy trade in the dairy ring with a nice amount of bidders present. The Judging was carried out by Richard Crabtree of Clifton who swiftly went about his business and chose a superb 30kg heifer from Brian Moorhouse of Bell Busk which proceeded to sell for the sale high of £2000 to Brian Blezard of Ribchester. The next highest price came from the Fort family of Silsden Moor with a sweet 28kg heifer selling for £1900 to Mark Goodall of Tong. Ian Parkinson of Barden continued his good run of newly calved cows with his 1st prize 2nd calver selling for £1800 MD Parkinson.

The rare breed sale at Craven Cattle Marts at Skipton Auction Mart was once again well supported, with a wide variety of sheep up for grabs at this sale. Any photos will be available next week.

Hitchen ducks head pecking order at CCM Skipton autumn poultry highlight Calderdale poultry breeder Stephen Hitchen, from Ludendenfoot, Halifax, ruled the roost when sending out the champions at the autumn Craven Premier Poultry show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart. (Saturday, September 7) He clinched another title at the North Yorkshire venue with his first prize pen of waterfowl, a trio of 2019 Silver Appleyard ducks, which sold for £40.

Milly Eaton Herdwick top of the flocks at Skipton native & rare breeds showcase Showing Herdwick sheep for the first time at her local auction mart, Skipton’s Milly Eaton was rewarded with a debut championship success in the annual rare and native breeds highlight. (Saturday, Sept 7) The 21-year-old clinched her CCM Skipton debut title win with her first prize April, 2017-born 2 shear ram, by a Gatesgarth tup from Anthony Hartley, of Turner Hall Farm in Dunnerdale, South Lakeland. He is one of the UK’s top Herdwick breeders.

Quality again on offer at Skipton prime cattle show day Skipton Auction Mart’s September prime cattle show attracted a high quality turnout of 27 under 30-month entries, producing an overall steer average of £1,320 per head, or 236.28p/kg, across the 558kg weight average, and a heifer average of £1,277, or 241.43p/kg for the 530kg weight average. A total of18 cattle from the entry made 230p/kg or above. (Mon, Sept 2)

Chapman Continentals champions at last at Skipton gimmer lamb showcase Dales sheep farmer Owain Chapman achieved his first major success at his local Skipton Auction Mart when consigning the first prize Continental pen at the latest fortnightly Wednesday store lamb fixture. (Wed, Sept 4) Mr Chapman, who farms with his partner Jenny Dolphin at Inmans Farm, Skyreholme, said he had been trying for seven or eight years to win the annual gimmer lamb showcase and while having picked up tickets in the past this was his first triumph.

BLUE TEXEL SHEEP - SATURDAY 31ST AUGUST 2019

3RD Annual Dales Blue Sale of Blue Texel & Blue Texel X Rams and Females The 3RD Annual Sale of Blue Texels saw a large quantity of sheep on offer with 87 Blue Texel sheep going under the hammer. Top call of the day came for a superb Blue Texel Ram from Tom Barley selling for 580gns to Mark Crabtree of Kettlesing with the next top call of the day coming for a superb Registered Gimmer Lamb from Enfys Willams of LLanadog which sold for 500gns with two others from the same vendor at 320gns.

Carperby Pastures flock secures 850gns breed record top price for ram lamb at Skipton Wensleydale highlight Nick Oliver, who runs the Carperby Pastures flock near Leyburn, was the standout performer by far with his home-bred ram lamb, which set a new breed society record price of 850gns for a tup lamb at the 128th annual Wensleydale Longwool Sheep Breeders Association show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart. (Sat, Aug 31)

Joint highs of 3,200gns at CCM Skipton pedigree Beltex highlight Penyghent flock lands supreme championship for Bradleys Joint top prices of 3,200gns for a shearling ram from Matthew Burleigh’s Matt’s flock in Northern Ireland and a ram lamb from Scottish breeder Richard Wood’s Kingledores flock were recorded at the Beltex Sheep Society’s annual early autumn two-day pedigree breed highlight at Skipton Auction Mart. Hope flock champion again and top price at Skipton Jacob showcase Wyn and Siwan Harries, who run the Hope flock at Wenant, near Llandeilo in Carmarthenshire, repeated the championship success achieved on their first-ever appearance last year on their return to the 2019 Jacob Sheep Society Northern Region 44th annual show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart. (Saturday, August 31) .

East Anglian repeat coup at CCM Skipton annual Hampshire Down showcase The East Anglian-based Jones family made the long journey north well worthwhile when securing the supreme championship for the second year running, plus the reserve championship for good measure, at the annual Hampshire Down ewe and ram show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart.
