CALVES - MONDAY 4TH FEBRUARY 2019

Rearing Calves to £415 (40) Dairy av £60 Cont av £250.96 Native av £161.33 A mixed entry of calves this morning with some very strong continentals on offer from N&R Sutcliffe and Church Farm Enterprises hitting £415 and £400 respectively, however a lot of young continentals brought the average considerably today. Young 10 to 14 day old continentals sold away to a straight trade of £170 to £200.

Halls of fame at CCM Skipton monthly prime lambs show ‘Halls of fame’ was a phrase that readily sprang to mind when two different local farming families of the same name took principal honours in the flagship Continental show class at Skipton Auction Mart’s February prime lambs show. (Mon, Feb 4) Michael Hall, of Scosthrop Farm, in the Malhamdale village of the same name, won the supreme championship with his first prize pen of five Beltex-cross lambs, all by home-bred tups, which went on to sell for the day’s joint top price per head price of £125, or 277.8p/kg. He was also responsible for the same way bred third prize pen. Both weighed in at 45kg, with Mr Hall adding a third pen at £124.

Critchleys recapture championship form at CCM Skipton prime cattle showcase The Red Rose Critchley beef farming family picked up its first prime cattle championship of the year at the second monthly show at Skipton Auction Mart. (Mon, Feb 4) The multiple past champions, who now bring cattle to the North Yorkshire mart virtually on a weekly basis, the majority bought in and further fattened at their Mercer Farm in Hutton, near Preston, clinched another title with the first prize 590kg Limousin-cross heifer, sold for £1,460, or 247.5p/kg, to Darley’s Nick Dalby, buying on behalf of principal weekly buyer Keelham Farm Shop, who claimed seven entries in total, five for its Skipton shop and a brace for Thornton.

Forward: 2,068 Feeding and Breeding Sheep. 1,837 Store Lambs & Feeding Ewes - Average £63.57 231 Breeding Ewes – Average £111.37 Another tremendous entry of store and feeding sheep for the time of year met with a fast selling trade when put in front of a good crowd of purchasers. Best Lambs topped at £100 form Hannah Brown and £99 from AM&HV Brown, strong lowland lambs on the day in the late 70’s and early 80’s, medium types in 70’s and longer keep types in the 60’s.

Aireburn herd bags another Craven Dairy Auction title Local husband and wife dairy farmers, Brian and Judith Moorhouse, who run the Aireburn pedigree Holstein Friesian herd at Hesper Farm, Bell Busk, picked up their first Craven Dairy Auction championship of 2019 at the year’s second fortnightly show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart. Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Lambs & Breeding Sheep Forward: 2432 Head, Overall av £65.96 (+£15.29 on Jan 2018 for 1129 more sold) A great start to the New Year with a large entry of sheep, almost double that seen at the same sale in 2018, and a trade to match. Buyers were out in force, with a large crowd assembled in the Lingfields Ring creating a trade for all classes that was beyond expectations, and an overall sale average of £65.96, being the dearest of the season.

Rearing Calves to £440 B&W av £42 Cont av £302.49 Native av £226.5 A smaller show of calves forward this morning but a very handy trade for the calves forward. Topping the billing was the first calf in the market from Joss Lancaster of Horton in Craven with a strong British Blue bull rumbling its way up to £440. The natives found some strong bidding too, ending up at an average of £251.67 for AA bulls.

Robert Crisp milkers take principal honours at opening Craven Dairy Auction Malhamdale’s Robert Crisp, of Nelson House, Calton, was crowned both champion and reserve with a brace of newly calven entries at the opening Craven Dairy Auction show and sale of 2019. (Mon, Jan 14) He bagged the title with an eight days-calved 25-litre second calver cow, a daughter of Reagancrest S Isley, and the reserve championship with a 24-litre 11 days-calved heifer by Zelgadis. Both are Genus dairy sires. The principals headed the selling prices at £1,800 and £1,880 respectively, both heading to Queensbury with regular dairy buyer Richard Sutcliffe.

Peter Woof takes pole position again at CCM Skipton Winter Texel showcase Cumbria’s Peter Woof, of Storth End Farm, Stainton, near Kendal, secured another Skipton Auction Mart title win with a shearling ewe at Northern Area Texel Sheep Breeders’ 26th annual opener winter show and sale of pedigree Texel females. (Thursday, Jan 10) Mr Woof was also following up on his championship coup at the breed society’s annual two-day Skipton highlight last September with another home-bred entry from his prolific Stainton flock, a March, 2017, daughter of the 8,500gns Anglezarke Uno, by Knock Trident, out of a dam by the same sire.
