Towers power again seen in CCM Skipton sheep show arena Red Rose farmer Robert Towers, of Camp House Farm, Farleton, has hardly put a foot wrong in the sheep show arena at Skipton Auction Mart this year. His latest success was a first prize success in the Easter show and sale of ewes with lambs at foot, following multiple prize wins at the opening ewes with lambs showcase, as well as a championship and reserve championship double at the Easter prime lambs highlight, both staged last month. Many of his frontrunners have also achieved top prices.

BACUP BUTCHER - MONDAY 9TH APRIL 2018

Bacup butcher buys another Skipton prime cattle champion For the second month in succession, Rossendale Valley butcher D Gregory & Sons in Bacup snapped up the supreme champion at Skipton Auction Mart’s monthly prime cattle showcase. After purchasing both the champion and reserve in March, butcher Phil Gregory returned to the ringside for the April highlight to pay the leading gross price of £1,599 for the title winner, a 600kg Limousin-cross steer from the Critchley family, of Mercer Farm, Hutton, near Preston, who also had the reserve champion.

Cracking prime sheep turnout and trade at CCM Skipton A much larger Monday turnout of 4,049 prime and cast sheep at Skipton Auction Mart also saw prices well up on the week, with multiple three-figure pen prices throughout. (Apr 9) First into the new sales ring were 62 Spring lambs and, with numbers way short of requirements, these set the pace for the day when selling to an overall average of £135.36 per head, or 320.14p/kg.

Stainbank double at Craven Dairy Auction The Stainbank pedigree Holstein Friesian dairy herd run by Robin Jennings at Hill House Farm, South Stainley, Ripon, secured its second Craven Dairy Auction championship of 2018 at Skipton Auction Mart’s opening April show and sale, also adding the reserve championship for good measure. (Mon, Apr 9)

BREEDING SHEEP - MONDAY 9TH APRIL 2018

A large show of Store & Breeding Sheep forward for sale and quality outfits in high demand, especially younger ewes with strong lambs at foot. The 226 outfits of sheep with lambs topped at £230 for Texel Shearlings and Twins from Alan Midgley, Luddendenfoot, the same vendor with two further pens at £220. Peter Simpson of Dacre had a nice run of Texel Ewes with twins, topping at £228 and £225, with Andrew Throup of Silsden selling Texel Ewes and Twins to £225.

Colin Whitelock calf champion as new Skipton sales ring is launched Skipton Auction Mart’s brand-new rearing calf sales ring was packed to the rafters for the first-ever sale in the new facility on a snowy bank holiday Monday Easter. (April 2) Known as the Stirton Ring, it forms part of the impressive new sales ring complex in the heart of the mart. There is also a new standalone sheep sales ring, which was also used for the first time on Monday.

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE - WEDNESDAY 28TH MARCH 2018

Forward: 599 head of cattle Comprising: 201 Young Feeding Bulls, 27 Beef Feeding Cows, 368 Bullocks & Heifers, & 3 Breeding Cattle. Feeding Bull trade very similar with a stronger entry and fewer high quality cattle in the entry. The few smaller end cattle were the best trade of the day whilst the top under 12 months bulls made £1100-£1225. Second draw heavier bulls a shade less on the fortnight.
