Double success for KT Wood at Craven Dairy Auction Broadwood Edge farmer Louise Wood took both Champion and Reserve at Craven Dairy Auction on Monday. (JULY 25) Louise and brother Sam sold their newly-calven heifers to a high of £1,600 and £1,480, the champion being a home-bred heifer giving 32 litres, sold to Alf and Andrew Townsend from Southfield, Burnley and the reserve going to the Sowray brothers from Bishop Thornton.

Kieran, three, takes top prize at Skipton young farmers’ highlight A three-year-old lad from Barnoldswick emerged as supreme champion at Skipton Auction Mart’s annual young handlers’ prime lamb show and sale on Monday. (JULY 25) Kieran Robinson, son of Scott and Laura, won with a well-presented Beltex cross lamb and the three-year-old was smart himself in a shirt, tie and white coat. Laura, who has won the supreme champion award herself twice before, said: “He’s very keen. He loves spending time with his granddad on the farm.”

Shaun Richards top dog at Skipton with 7,200gns bitch North Craven’s Shaun Richards was top dog again at Skipton Auction Mart annual summer sale of working sheep dogs when selling a well-bred two-year-old tri-coloured bitch for 7,200gns (£7,560). (Friday, July 22) Mr Richards, who runs Pen-y-Borough Sheep Dogs in Eldroth, near Settle, in the shadow of Pen-y-Ghent, secured top call with his fully Irish-bred and bought Nell, by the renowned stud dog and multiple trials winner Knockmaa Jack, from Michael Hynes in Belclare, County Galway, out of David Nevin’s Jan.

Fortnightly Sale of Young Feeding Bulls, Store Bullocks & Heifers, Breeding Cattle Forward: 399 head of cattle Comprising: 76 Young Feeding Bulls, 6 Feeding Cows, 289 Bullocks & Heifers & 28 Breeding Cattle CCM Conducted their fortnightly cattle sale at Skipton on Wednesday where a bumper summer sale entry of nearly 400 head were forward for sale. The morning saw young bulls set off at a fair rate recording an overall average of £1,025 for all sold, Ian Pratt of Erringdon once again led the market prices with two strong Limousin crosses at £1,270 and £1,250. A mixed bag of feeding cows this week from a nice Blonde topping at £910 down to a lightweight older Angus at £340, plenty of buyers for Beef Bred cows and this section is a good place to sell genuine feeding cows alongside good fleshy types.

Rearing Calves to £490 (65) B&W av £118 Cont av £382 Native av £216.5 Yet again a swift trade in the calf ring for all types. Hayton Stocks topped the day’s trade with some 2 month old Simmentals topping at £490. Mark Houseman was in charge of Church Farm Enterprises’ consignment today with their bulls topping at £460 and 6 between there and £420 from the same home. RM Spence took the top with his Friesian calf at £205 with days average for B&W’s at £118. Natives saw more fierce competition with good show receiving a healthy trade, bulls to £330 for a AA out of a Friesian and Natives averaging £216.5.

SKIPTON AUCTION MART MARKET REPORT – WEDNESDAY 13th July 2016 Opening Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Lambs Forward: 4258 Head, Overall av £61.76 (+£3) A sound start to the season at Skipton with a much increased entry of lambs seeing the average rise by some £3 per head. The champion pen of lambs, chosen by Judge Stephen Maskill, came from Chris & Thomas Heseltine of Bolton Abbey sold for a solid price of £76 per head to Thomas Walmsley of Haverah Park.

CALVES - MONDAY 11TH JULY 2016

Rearing Calves to £480x2 B&W av £102.5 Cont av £390.7 Native av £255.83 Trade not quite as electric as last week but continentals and natives on the receiving end of a better trade. Top price of the year however was seen for the best Friesian bull on sale at £310 from R&M Spence, Sutton In Craven. British Blue bulls saw an elevated trade despite no barnstorming prices an average of £421 was seen for a show of good quality with Church Farm Enteprises, GT Booth, Wrights of Ayrton and Parker of Bentham all having bulls well above £400. Simmental took joint top at £480 from Hayton and Stocks with Blondes seeing a super trade averaging £363 for good quality items.

Forward: 386 head of cattle Comprising: 105 Young Feeding Bulls, 9 Beef Bred Feeding Cows , 235 Bullocks & Heifers & 37 Breeding Cattle At CCM Auctions fortnightly cattle sale there was a very good entry of nearly 400 head for a mid-summer sale. Young Bull trade was just up a notch with a top of £1,290 for a 13 month Blue cross from Messrs Lodge of Westside House, Malham Moor, closely followed at £1,280 for 13month Limousin cross from Jimmy Baines of Trawden who also sold a 12month old Blue cross at £1,200. Strong bulls continued a good trade all sale long with Robert Wade of Connonley making £1,260 and £1,200 of 12month old Limousin crosses.

Rearing Calves to £450 (70) B&W av £152.5 Cont av £333.32 Native av £220.6 A sublime trade in the calf ring once more with black and whites fiercely bid over to an average of £152.50 and topping at a majestic £280 for a superb bull calf only 1 month old from Michael Heron of Bramhope, Paul and Janet Bolland received £240 for their best B&W bull and Anthony Bolland receiving £225 and £205 for two of his consignment. Black and White Calves averaged 29 days old.

Ireland victors land top by-weight call at Skipton prime lamb show Prime sheep numbers saw an anticipated sharp increase for the time of year when totalling 3,647 head at Skipton Auction Mart’s opening July fixture, which incorporated the monthly show for Spring lambs.
