HOLSTEIN DAIRY SHOW - MONDAY 24TH APRIL 2017

Aireburn pedigree bull takes £3,200 top price at Yorkshire Holstein Club showcase Fort family secure first-ever Skipton dairy championship Skipton Auction Mart staged its second show and sale for pedigree and commercial Holsteins on behalf of the Yorkshire Holstein Club, when top price of £3,200 fell to a promising young dairy bull from the Moorhouse family’s Aireburn herd in Bell Busk, while the supreme champion newly calven heifer came from the Fort family’s Silmoor herd on Silsden Moor. Both run pedigree holdings.

Forward: 19 Prime cattle comprising 11 Clean Cattle (under 30 mos) & 8 Cast Cattle. 2,463 Prime Sheep comprising 31 Spring Lambs, 2005 Old Season Lambs, 427 Cast Ewes & Rams. 861 Breeding Sheep. 73 Rearing Calves.

BREEDING SHEEP - MONDAY 17TH APRIL 2017

861 Breeding Sheep A much increased entry today for the weekly sale but easily dealt with as the sale ring was rammed to the rafters with customers looking for sheep. More younger ewes and hoggs with lambs at foot now starting to come forward and plenty of buyers for them, best of the mule hoggs & singles £200 plus today, 36 outfits of Mule Hoggs & Singles av £195.97. As ever older ewes with strong lambs were keenly sought.

CALVES - MONDAY 17TH APRIL 2017

Rearing Calves to £500 (73) B&W av £84.07 Cont av £347.80 Native av £218 Shaun Sowray of Sowray Bros from Bowes Green Farm, Bishop Thornton presented the Champion calf this morning for the CCM Easter show. The Calf sired by Brennand General (owned by the Walker family at Dunsop Bridge) stood out in the class, and the ring selling to the sale high of £500 to Andrew Houseman of Darley. Reserve Champion from Fred and Mark Houseman of Burton Leonard took the reserve championship with another impressive calf which sold for £450 to Mr Houseman again. Blue Heifers were led by the Houseman family again with their sweet heifer calf reaching £450 selling to the Abbott Bros of Dacre. 11 of 23 Blue Bulls over £400 and 10 Blue heifers over £350.

BEEF FEEDING COWS - WEDNESDAY 12TH APRIL 2017

Harry serves up another Skipton champion for Calderdale farming brothers Calderdale farming brothers David and Stephen Hollings, of Spinks Hill Farm, Pecket Well, Hebden Bridge, claimed another championship at Skipton Auction Mart. (Wed, Apr 12) It came in the Spring store cattle show with the Hollings brothers’ first prize British Blue-cross heifer by Littlebank Harry, who was also responsible for their victor in a young bulls show at Skipton last month.

BEEF SEASON IS STARTING - APRIL 2017

Pedigree cattle set to beef up 2017 seasonal showcase at CCM Skipton Skipton Auction Mart is gearing up for its 2017 pedigree beef show and sale season, a series of high profile Wednesday fixtures. It opens on April 26 with the annual show and sale of British Blue breeding bulls, cows and heifers, complemented by a prize sale for British Blue-sired store cattle. The fixture is again expected to create significant interest among potential buyers of sires suitable for breeding on both pedigree and commercial beef and dairy herds.

Rearing Calves to £405 (60) B&W av £70.13 Cont av £322.58 Native av £205.65 Handy show of calves and a healthy ringside of buyers saw a good trade for what was on offer. Black and Whites were not quite as spicy as last week but not quite the quality to match either. An 8 week old bull topped at £190 from Alf and Andrew Townsend with Michael Heron’s 3 week old Friesian bulls at £112 and £102 with Brian Moorhouse of Bell Busk making £110 with a handy Holstein calf.

BREEDING SHEEP - MONDAY 10TH APRIL 2017

Breeding Sheep A large entry this week of sheep with lambs at foot and generally a younger selection of ewes too, with more shearlings and hoggs with lambs each week now. Best of the shearlings came from David White of High Garnshaw who sold mules with twins to £205, whilst the first hoggs with singles of this season sold to £195 from RG Johnson & Son. Best of the ewes were correct texels with twin beltex lambs at £215 from Les Grange, Follifoot.

Butchers out in force at Skipton Easter Spring lamb highlight Wigglesworth Beltex-cross crowned supreme champion Retail and wholesale butcher buyers were again well represented at the ringside at Skipton Auction Mart’s annual seasonal Spring lamb show and sale in their quest to source new season lambs for this weekend’s Easter tables. Breeding Sheep A good show of outfits for this weeks sale saw trade for commercial outfits dearer on the week with a full ringside of buyers present looking for mouths to graze the fast growing grass. Top price was £215 for Mule Shearlings with twins for David White, who also sold correct mules with twins to £192. Top price singles was £190 for Texel correct ewes with nice Beltex lambs from Alan Midgley.
