3,942 Prime Sheep comprising 412 Spring Lambs & 2597 Hoggs & 933 Cast Ewes & Rams
A good entry of nearly 4,000 sheep on a busy day at CCM and trade was sharp with customers keen.
412 Spring Lambs.
Total entry up by 50% on the week as numbers begin to arrive quickly. Best end over £4kilo or adding up to £175/£185 in the lump, topping at 489p (38kg £186) from Dyason Brown Farming of Pateley Bridge purchased by Knavesmire Butchers of York who also purchased lambs at 481p (37kg £178) from Andrew Brown of Gargrave.
Top price per head of £189 (43kg 439.5p) was achieved by JA Stoney & Son of Pateley Bridge purchased by Knavesmire Butchers.
Increased numbers of Suffolk & Charollais Lambs bred from Mule Ewes making it to the market now, with 330p to 350p being the price range dependent on weight.
2,597 Hoggs.
An increased entry this week with several vendors clearing up the last of their hoggs for this season and trade was tremendous considering the high proportion of hill lambs presented and reducing quality.
As a result, anything smarter or suitable for retail and wholesale butcher supply saw a very sharp trade.
6 pens of hoggs into the £190’s this week, with two vendors topping the sale at £198, those being RJ Bailes Boroughbridge and EP&JM Hutchinson Faceby. Both pens purchased by Worsley Wholesale Butchers. RJ Bailes sold others at £188 £187 and £186 in a super run of 121 to £173.56.
EP&JM Hutchinson had other pens ay £196 and £188. JT Rushton Elslack sold hoggs at £193 and W Walmsley Bishop Thornton topped at £190.
A noted run of good fed hoggs came from RL&AR Phillips of Burton Leonard with pens at £190 £189 £188 three times, and £185 twice.
Best Hoggs making 350p to 390p per kilo.
The trade of the day was reserved for any well fleshed hoggs regardless of breed either lightweight or handyweight up to 45kg with these being way short of requirements on the day and a good trade all sale long, with the last consignment of hoggs in the ring being 46 Swales 43kg £129 (300p). Other handy weight Swales mainly around 290p/300p, Blackies 310p/320p, nice Cheviots similar money.
Continentals and Suffolks 36kg to 45kg av 321p topping at 365p form RL&AR Phillips.
Overall average for Hoggs was 305p (SQQ 311p) representing an excellent result for a very typical late season show.
933 Cast and Feeding Ewes and Rams - A Massive entry of ewes this week. Heaviest ewes less on the week but mediums and lean ewes sold away to an active audience ringside with a new buyer ringside for mediums ¾ to full meat ewes. Less heavy ewes entered today heaviest ewes up to £164.50 from Bob Stubbs, Crowton. Heaviest well-bred Cont ewes £150-£161.50 with heavy first cross ewes £130-£145 and medium pure-bred ewes realising similar prices.
Mules sold well even if a touch less than last weeks bumper trade. Heaviest ewes £100+ with the best full fleshed £110-£125. Mediums £90-£100 and lean ewes £78-£85.
Suffolks up to £157.50 with heaviest £140-£157 Mediums £128-£138 for well bred ewes. Half meat ewes £95-£108 and ¾ meat £108-£118.
Swales sold well with top prices for meat ewes £78-£85 for ewes with size mediums £70+ lean ewes £58-£68 and Plain ewes £45-£55. Several runs of ewes from Derbyshire today with Gritstones making £106.50 from SL Fairfax, Bakewell. Scotch ewes from Derbyshire also sold to £88.50.
