Prime Cattle (under 30 mos) Sales every Monday at 11:30am

A very good pre-Easter trade as catering and retail demand builds up. Top price was £1946 or 316.5p/kg paid by Ralph Pearson for a 615kg Limousin cross heifer from CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield. Top steer was £1912 or 321.5p/kg which was the leading price by weight for a 595kg Limousin cross from F&B Smith of Masongill, which sold to Robertshaws Farm Shop in Thornton. Also, amongst the Robertshaws Farm Shop purchases was another F&B Smith owned animal this time a Limousin cross heifer which weighed 540kg and made 316.5p/kg or £1709. 5 B&W heifers are included in the AHDB heifer average of 242p/kg with the continental cross heifer average 300.25p/kg against a steer average of 307.92p/kg.

More forward for sale today and another very sharp trade to see an overall selling average of 343p or per head . Top price at 400p or £160 was Harry Walters of Penistone. Others at 395p or £158, 391p and 387p from B&ME Craven & Son York. M&J Smith York made £159.50 or 379.8p. Messrs Marwood of Whenby made £154 or 375p of 41kg Charollais.

Lightweight and Standard weight lambs (under 40kg) were very good to sell and way short of requirements, a sign that these weights generally aren’t available in any great quantity at the moment. Mediums were a decent trade (40-45kg) being similar on the week.
Heavies and overweights were forward in large numbers with 1066 scaling 46kg to 52kg and 992 head at 53kg or more, and these are coming under price pressure in recent weeks especially for commercial sorts.

OVER 52kg
Prices for overweight’s peaked at £164 for Texels from PR Weaver, Newark who sold others at £158 £155 and £150. EP&JM Hutchinson made £156 and £151. Smart skinned lambs could make £140 regular away, commercial sorts £125 to late £130’s.

46kg to 52kg
EP&JM Hutchinson presented a cracking run of Continental crosses and made £162 £161.50 £160 £157 twice and £156 or 325p to 343p pkg. Messrs Atkinson Harrogate sold 46kg at £160 or 347p. J Drinkall Anglezarke sold 47kg to £154. JGE Heseltine of Bolton Abbey made £155 of 48kg.

36kg to 45kg
Easily the best weight bracket to sell, especially the 37kg to 42kg well fleshed sorts, but only 1/3rd of the entry hitting this specification. JE Burrow made £170 and £166 or 415p and 377p.
J Kitching of Harrogate made £159 of 42kg or 378p.
JC Marshall Dacre made £156 of 45kg 346p a price matched by JGE Heseltine of Bolton Abbey.
Messrs Atkinson of Harorgate made 400p when selling 36kg Beltex at £144.


32kg to 35kg
A sharp trade for anything well fleshed. 305p for 35kg from JGE Heseltine. JJ Garnet 35kg at £102, JG Broadley of Masham and I&J Smith of Penistone both made £101 of 34kg.

Hill Bred
Mule wethers generally just a shade harder work this week, Having said that some excellent prices in the lump with KN&CA Heath Macclesfield making £135.50 and £134. Masham from PT&L Johnson Lincoln made £125. Per kilo IM Bell of Carleton made 271p and S&P Scrivin Elslack sold at 260p.  
Horned lambs saw Messrs Forshaw of Longridge sell Scotch Blackface at 293p and 280p. S&P Scrivin made 273p of Gritstones and 270p of Lonks. Swales made to 243p from RG Church Otley or in the lump sold to £119.50 from KN&CA Heath Macclesfield and £113 CT Akrigg of Cray. Dalesbred 243p from B Dibb. Cheviots peaked at 270p from H Downs & Son.



No let-up in trade today with ewes selling to a top price of £329.50 from Mr A Atkinson, Harrogate. Best Texel ewes selling over £200 for size, weight and frame. Well-bred medium ewes £165-£180. First cross heavies £170-£190 with a few reaching over £200. Medium first crossed ewes full fleshed £135-£150 and smalls £120+. Plain feeding ewes of all cross’s sold at £70-£90. Beltex ewes sold to £213.50 from David & Karen Shuttleworth, Gargrave. A large run of lean meat Suffolk ewes fresh spained from B&M Craven sold in the range of £130-£155 with heavies £170. Suffolks topped at £237.50 from N Agar, Liverton Redcar. Heavy Mules sold to £155.50 from B&M Craven, Kexby. Fat mules £132-£150 with mediums £125-£135 and lean mules £100-£115. Plain mules £65-£85 depending on size. Swale ewes sold to £119.50 from AL Dean & Sons, Threshfield. Full meat swales with size £100-£119.50. Lean ¾ meat swales £70-£85 and plain ewes £40-£55 with some very light ewes in the £20-£35 range. Lonks sold to £89.50 from AE Schindler, Skipton. Cheviot ewes sold to £107.50 from D&GM Scott, Clitheroe. Zwartble ewes sold to £194.50 from J&A Stevenson, Saltburn by the Sea.

A great day round the ring today with exactly 100 head forward for the April Sale of Milkers and Speacial Spring Sale of Dairy Youngstock and Followers attracting a packed ringside.
