Forward: 38 Prime cattle comprising 21 Clean Cattle (under 30 mos), 3 Clean Cattle (over 30 mos) & 14 Cast Cattle 5,016 Prime Sheep comprising 4141 Prime Lambs & 875 Cast Ewes & Rams 38 Rearing Calves 9 Dairy 2 Loads of Produce.



Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)
Fed Continental cattle a very good trade with most of the weights 620kg+ and all the ‘U’ grade type cattle making 285p+ regardless of weight. Overall averages include numbers of outside fed Native breed cattle and a couple of Holstein heifers. Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers from Bradford opened the week with the leading gross priced steer a 665kg Bazadaise cross from CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield at £1899 or 285.5p/kg and leading heifer from the same vendor, a 655kg British Blue cross at £1870 or 285.5p/kg. In the retail weights S&P Scriven of Elslack presented a 540kg homebred British Blue heifer which made 296.5p/kg or £1601 when selling to Robertshaws Farm Shop in Thornton. Leading the steers at 291.5p/kg or £1793 was a 615 kg Limousin cross from RT&J Critchley&Sons of Hutton which sold to Robert Pearson on behalf of Ralph Pearson. Blue Grey steers sold to 220p/kg to Swaledale Foods from Andrew Haggas of Otterburn.

Edge is off the cull cows at the moment as factories concentrate on clean cattle, but there is shortage of cattle carrying finish and fed cattle in general. Dairies carrying meat and weight are 120p+, Steaking cows 115p, Plains 90p.

5,016 Prime & Cast Sheep
Lamb numbers excellent today, with top side of 4,000 head presented and sold to a very solid trade all day long, levelling at 238p across the board for all weights and grades.
Best Beltex lambs to 345p from Ellis Bros, 341p and 340p form Messrs Atkinson and 340p from George Sunderland. Heavy Lambs once more a good trade, plenty at £135 to £145 for quality butchers types, topping £155 £149 and £146 from Messrs Atkinson, £150 and £149 from G Sunderland, £150 Kevin Huck and £148 from John Brotherton.
Commercial heavy lambs again finding a good following, whilst handy and lightweight lambs were an excellent trade, especially the well fleshed types, 240p to 255p.
Ewes - A lesser show of ewes and rams in today with 875 forward but a lot more leaner ewes and less heavies forward. Smart well-bred heavies £140-£159.50 full meat mediums £125-£135. Medium crossed ewes £90-£105. Lean ewes £75-£85 with feeding ewes £50-£70. Heavy mules £95-£117.50, full meat mediums £80-£90 and ¾ and half meat mules £70-£80 and feeding ewes £40-£55. Best Swales £54-£63.50 mediums £45-£52 and leans £30-£38 with plain ewes £14-£28.
Keep them full fleshed ewes coming forward.

38 Rearing Calves to £425

Bull Calves
Nice show of calves in today with good Bulls and Heifers selling very well. Blue Bulls selling at £400-£425 for best end £360-£380 mediums and £270-£300 for smalls. Blue heifers all sold from £270-£345. Angus bulls all in the region of 3270-£295 with a few youngsters less money. Angus heifers £165-£200. Black and Whites dearer than last week with mediums £60-£80 with stronger goods £85-£95 and Pure British Frisians £160.

8 Dairy

Trade was swift for the first Dairy sale of October at CCM Skipton peaking at £2600 for the Champion as selected by sale judge Martyn Jennings. This black heifer calved on 22nd September and was already at 36kg as part of the 120 cow robot milked herd of Mark Smith and team at Winterburn, she heads to Messrs Goodall.
Brian Moorhouse's second placed heifer sired by Hartley and from his high fat yielding Helena family made £2250 and travels to Brian Blezard at Ribchester, while Martin Petch had a 43kg heifer by Doorman make £1850 and she was one of the three heading back with Mark Goodall to Tong. Heifers in milk averaged £2233.
Ian Parkinson, Barden sold the last of his 2021 crop a third calved very youthful cow for £1600, while Alan and Jack Wilson from Green Hammerton continued their dispersal with a run of an in milk fifth calver, three in calf cows and an in calf heifer - trade for these in calf to Limousin, Saler and Holstein was swift and the five found new homes among four new owners - with the batch averaging £1310.
With many buyers on hand some went home empty handed so more are sought for the next sale on Monday 25th October.
