Forward: 44 Prime cattle comprising 19 Clean Cattle (under 30 mos) & 25 Cast Cattle, 3,685 Prime Sheep comprising 3037 Prime Hoggs, 648 Cast Ewes & Rams, 56 Rearing Calves, 287 Breeding & Store Sheep comp 139 Ewes with Lambs & 148 Store Sheep.

Prime Cattle (under 30 mos) Sales every Monday at 11:30am

A useful entry of clean cattle with not as much weight and a sense that buyers were looking to buy cattle for less to face an uncertain trade. Ralph Pearson, wholesale butchers from Bradford were the leading buyers with the remainder of the entry spread evenly around the ring. Good quality retail weights were still 290p/kg+ with the best a 555kg Limousin cross heifer sold by CD&RF Kitching, Threshfield to Robertshaws Farm Shop, Thornton at 296.5p/kg or £1646. Mesrs Kitching also headed up the steers with a 620kg British Blue cross which sold at 290.5p/kg (£1801) to Barkers Yorkshire Butchers, Skipton. Messrs Pearson headed the top gross prices in the and heavy cattle amongst the purchasers, with another Kitching purchase, a 665kg Limousin at £1839 or 276.5p/kg and leading heifer a 635kg Limousin cross from Mesrs E&M Townley&Son of Clapham at £1775 or 279.5p/kg. Other buyers present were J&E Medcalf, Halifax and Keelham Farm Shop, Skipton.

Cull Cow Prices Sales every Monday at 11:30am

Cast cow trade continues at pace with a sale average without a Continental in the mix. Heavy dairies if carrying flesh are around 160p/kg with lean cows 130-140p/kg and an odd plain at 100p. Beef cows equally sought, a young Angus cow at 211.5p/kg and the remainder of the entry heavy thick meated natives at 145-168p/kg.

LAMBS
A large show of 3000 Hoggs penned for sale and trade variable depending on weight and breed. Lightweights and Handy weights of all breeds good to sell with 36kg to 45kg weight range all breeds averaging 271p. Nice selling lambs weighing early to mid 40s also a decent trade, commercial types of goods weighing in the higher 40’s and early 50’s finding more resistance than of late, but good heavies a nice trade again.

OVER 52kg
462 lambs in this weight range today, The better lambs on the day in the £130’s and £140’s peaking at £147 £145 and £144 all from EP&JM Hutchinson Faceby and all heading off with Joe Bosworth, Rossendale.

46kg to 52kg
An additional 1136 lambs weighing 46kg to 52kg with a lot of heavy lambs finding their way on to the market at the moment. Tony & Kay Kiernan of St Michaels headed off with the top section price of £151 for a pen of 47kg Beltex. EP&JM Hutchinson in the mix again at £145 going to Kendfalls Farm Butchers in Pateley Bridge. Banks Farms of Worksop made £144. .

36kg to 45kg
Only 1314 lambs in the main handy weight range and finding a strong kilo average on the day. Top sale price belonged to Tony & Kay Kiernan St Michaels led the section at £160 or 400p/kg, and also sold two other pens at £150 per head. Messrs Atkinson Harrogate made £157 or the top kilo price of 402p/kg for a pen of 12 Beltex crosses, with others at £148 and two at £146, main of the better lambs 320p to 380p on the day.
Some better runs of handy Cheviots and similar bred types 255p to 270p, commercial sorts 240p to 250p.
Some best Mules and Mashams around 250p but others around 230p.

35kg or less
Thomas Shepherdson reached £126 with a pen of 234kg Beltex at 370p. Other better Continentals 250p to 300p. Horned lambs 210p to 230p.

 

Cull Ewes trade just as dear for the ewes with a good run of heavies forward. Ewes topped at £300 for a Texel ewe donated by Mr Andrew Atkinson, Harrogate which sold to Saj Shan the first time and then sold to Abas for the second time for £215 then finally selling at £205 again to Saj Shan. Heavy pure continental ewes £175-£190 with best Texels £200-£230. Plenty of suffolks with weight £150-£170 and best ewes £180+. Medium nice selling white faced ewes sold from £145-£160 depending on size. First cross mediums £115-£130. And light weights £100-£120. Swale ewes sold to £113.50 from JM Dagget, Hartlington. Good full meat Swales with weight £85-£100 mediums ewes £70-£82 and strong lean ewes £55-£70 whilst plain ewes sold in the £40-£62 range. Mules sold to £135.50 from M&K Farrar, Tadcaster. Heavies £115-£130 with mediums £100-£115 and lean ewes £90-£105 whilst the plain swales sold at £65-£80. Char X ewes sold at £191.50 from A&K Kiernan, Preston. Lonk ewes sold at £102.50 for a large pen from SP&VM Morris, Preston.

56 Rearing Calves to £470 Sales Every Monday at 10:30am

 

57 Calves forward today with a few fresh faces ringside. Blue bulls meeting plenty of demand with all classes keenly bid for. Top price went to G Hayton & EC Stocks, Bolton Abbey for his Lim X Bull selling to £470. Top price blue bull sold at £440 from A Sowray & Son, Bishop Thornton. Best blue bulls reaching over the £400 mark with mediums £300-£360 and smalls £250-£280 with everything £225 upwards. Blue heifers sold well with best ended calves £300+ mediums £280+ and nice rearing smalls £220-£250 with a few bobbies below the £200 mark. Black & Whites bull calves a good trade throughout with a mixed quality on offer. Good rearing Black & Whites at the 3-4 weeks of age £70-£102 with top price going to RE Ayrton & Son, Eastby. 2–3-week-old calves £40-£60 with some bobby goods £20-£30. Angus bulls topped at £315 from A Sowray & Son, Bishop Thornton. Mediums native bulls £250-£300 with smalls £200-£230. Angus heifers £170-£190 for strength in the 3 weeks of age department and £122 upwards for the younger plainer goods.

139 Breeding Sheep Sales Every Monday at 11:30am

A nice trade for the entry penned today, with older ewes probably just a shade dearer on the week. A nice morning and generally drier weather brought a busier crowd ringside looking for outfits. The pens will get fuller now as the weeks progress giving potential customers a greater choice, keep an eye on the catalogue listing every Friday afternoon for the following Monday sale.
A good penning of store sheep from several vendors saw trade peak at £122 for nice Continental crosses from J Crowther with other better sorts in three figures. Store Sheep sold every week between the Sheep with Lambs at Foot and the fat sheep. Thankyou.
