Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)
A very high class show for a mid-month sale and trade as stronger than ever with 300p/kg now the norm for the top end. Top price per kg was 306.5p (£1670) paid for a 545kg British Blue cross steer from F&B Smith of Masongill which sold to D&A Gregory&Sons for their Bacup shop. Mesrs Gregory also secured a 565kg Limousin cross steer for 301.5p/kg or £1703 from RT&J Critchley&Sons of Hutton. Heaviest beast at 620kg was also the top gross at £1752 a Limousin cross steer sold for 282.5p/kg by CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield to Ralph Pearson, wholesale butchers from Bradford. Top gross heifer was £1690 or 286.5p/kg a 580kg British blue cross heifer to Ralph Pearson, by Simon Bennett of Silsden Moor. Premium cattle are in very short supply and all outlets are struggling to keep up with the seasonal demand.

2,993 Prime Sheep comprising 2,440 Prime Lambs & 553 Cast Ewes & Rams
Lambs - A nice trade for lambs today although there was a much more varied selection than last week, but even with a couple of regular buyers having a day off, the whole sale still averaged 238p across the board. A tidy result!
The per kilo prices were dominated by a couple of vendors, Ellis Bros of Addingham Moorside sold at 351p (41kg £144) to Vivers Scotlamb, 341.9p (43kg £147) to Hartshead Meat Co, with other pens at 333p 314p and 310p.
Tom Hill & Ruby Wright of Doncaster also led the way with lambs at 338.6p, 318p and 304p.
Per head it was a heavy lamb from Peter Longdin of Doncaster that caught the eye when making £165 selling to Hartshead Meat Co.
JP Barnes of Clitheroe was next in line at £152 to J&E Medcalf Wholesale Meats.
Hill & Wright achieved £149, Kevin Huck form Bordley, Skipton made £148 to Pateley Bridge and Harrogate retail butchers Kendalls Farm Butchers. Ellis Bros also got in on the act at £147. M Ryder & Son of Harrogate topped an excellent consignment of heavy lambs at £146.50 that saw 7 pens in the £140’s. Ken Gamble of Easingwold topped his entry at £146.
54 pens of lambs at 270p plus today, and 51 pens making £130 or more.
Commercial lambs that had been fed or full of meat were a nice trade, but buyers wary of anything not meeting the mark.
Ewes - Trade still showing no sign of letting off with a real mixed show of ewes in. Plenty of lean ewes forward selling well but plain still selling at realisation. Strong mules £108-£124.50 mediums full meat £100-£112 lean ewes £78-£90 depending on frame. Plain ewes with size £55-£65 other ewes less. White headed ewes avg £116 Top price of £171.50 from M Ryder & Sons, Harrogate. Best bred heavies £140-£164.50 with a large shortage of these ewes forward. Heavy crossed ewes’ full meat £135-£150. Mediums full meat £120-£132. Lean continentals £90-£100 with plainer grazing end £85 and small lean ewes £78-£85. ¾ meat ewes £105-£115. Horned ewes a nice trade with White Faced Woodland ewes from H Smith, Sheffield selling to £103.50. Medium horned ewes £55-£62 Well fleshed ewes £70-£80 with heavies selling to £90.
More ewes required with an active ringside of buyers.
