N/S LAMBS
A very similar trade on the week. Best end over 400p from Craven Farms of York selling to 422p (40kg £169) 421p (38kg £160) 415p (38kg £158) and 397p. P&B Fox of York weren’t far behind when making 382p. Charles Marwood of Whenby peaked at 373p.

O/S LAMBS
Another busy day in the hogg market as the Bank Holiday making very little impression on the total entry with buyers generally keen for sheep. Light, standard and the smaller end of medium weights very good to sell with customers keen for these weights. Heavier and overweight lambs were a good trade for smarter end for retail or quality wholesale use,  but the rougher skinned lambs still finding the going tougher.
A large entry of horned lambs forward today, and the mid 30kg to mid 40kg weights were good to sell as buyers look for this weight range regardless of breed. Mule wethers would be a shade better on the week with handier weights generally in the the 260p region.

Over 52kg
Phil Weaver of Newark headed the prices in this section at £168 for Texel crosses. Jill Perrings of Settle made £159, EP&JM Hutchinson Faceby £158, Pete Longdin of Tickhill £158 and Ken Gamble Easingwold £157. The smarter end of lambs in the £150 and £140’s. Commercial sorts £130’s and some 52kg 53kg commercial sorts late £120’s. Nearly a quarter of today’s entry fell into this range.

46kg to 52kg
A bit of trade on today for nice lambs, Messrs JM&JV Howard, Holme topped at £156.50 or 340p, EP&JM Hutchinson £156, JS Stephenson Bordley and E Simpson & Son Dinkley both sold at £155. Better end of lambs £135 to £155, nice sorts £130/£135, good commercials generally in the £120’s. 263p would be a good result on the day for this range.

36kg to 45kg
Lambs good to sell for handyweights. Jeff Burrow sold to £159 and 370p. Ralph Crabtree Otley £158 and 376p. Other pens of good lambs £135 to £155 or 340p to 365p.  Nice sorts of lambs 310p to 340p, and commercial sorts 280p to 300p generally. A lot of hill bred and horned in this weight category today bring the section average to 275p.
Hill Bred
Mule wethers a nice trade for early to mid 40’s weights, the nicer end around 260p. Heavier goods finding a ceiling on price and harder to break through this.
Cheviot wethers hit £129 or 307p form A&K Kiernan of St Micahaels. Joe Drinkall Anglezarke made 290p and Tim Robinson Dutton 287p
Horned lambs saw Messrs Oldfield of Tadcaster make 280p of Scotch Blackies, and A&B Simpson of Hope Vallet sell Scotch Blackface £118. Several large runs though making £112 to £117 at handy weights and being very good to sell. Swales sold to £116 this week from A&CA Parkinson Chipping,  JA&JH Hewetson topped the breed at 262p, with plenty of better pens, mainly lightweights 240p to 260p. Brian Bibb peaked the Dalesbred at £118 or 273p, other at £108 or 263p. Messrs Howard of Holme sold Lonks to 267.5p.

Heaviest ewes £160-£190 with good well fleshed medium White faced ewes £135-£155. Lean selling ewes £120-£130 with crossed ewes £110-£125. Some feeding ewes in the £70-£100 range and a few lambing casualties less. Strong mules sold to £154.50 from SM&S Collinson, Blackburn.
