3,035 Prime Sheep comprising 2455 Prime & Lightweight Hoggs & 580 Cast Ewes & Rams

Sheep numbers were a shade tighter today, but that proved ok and certainly helped keep trade moving along quite nicely, and although we were a couple of faces missing ringside today, the overall selling average was a very pleasing 260.71p/kg and SQQ 265.9p.

Lowland Lambs over 52kg – This weight grade were easily as good to sell as last week, and would be a shade dearer in places as the weight bracket averaged 236p, plus 6p/kg on the week. A few pens over £140, with EP&JM Hutchinson, Faceby topping at £142 for 56kg Continentals purchased by Robertshaws Farmshop, a price equaled later in the sale by J&M Blakey, Bolton by Bowland with 53kg Continentals selling to Kendalls Farm Butchers. Toothill Bros of Doncaster sold 58kg at £138.50, KG Stapleton Skipton 54kg at £137.50 and JR Crabtree of Otley 58kg at £137. Another 19 pens in this weight range £130 and above.

46kg to 52kg Lowland Lambs – Top price for this weight range as JM Hall of Airton sold 51kg Beltex to £152 per head purchased by Brayton Farmshop in Selby. J Hartley of Barlick was next in line at £145 for 50kg Continentals, J&M Blakey £142 for 48kg Continentals, a price matched by James Towler of Grindleton again for 48kg Continentals, and £140 for 50 kg Continentals from EP&JM Hutchinson. 15 other pens in the £130’s.

36kg to 45kg Lowland Lambs: a solid trade in this category today and a weight range average of 276p for Continentals bringing back some excellent returns for all involved. The top price of the whole sale came for the very first sheep in the ring when DN&D Capstick sold 45kg Continentals at £155 (344p) each to Vivers Scotlamb. Ellis Bros were next in line at £146 with 44kg Beltex to Paul Watson, and the same vendors sold 43kg at £145 to Brayton Farmshop, followed by S&P Scrivin Elslack selling 40kg for the top kilo price on the day of 360p when making £144 also to Brayton Farmshop. JE Burrow, KIrkby Malham was close behind at 357p when selling 40kg at £143 to Vivers Scotlamb, whilst J&M Blakey sold two pens of 45kg at £140 each, one pen to Vivers Scotlamb, the other to Paul Watson. James Towler was also up at £140 with 44kg selling to Vivers Scotlamb. Another good list of lambs making in the £130’s or 300p plus as well.
As in recent weeks, decent cross bred commercial lambs at handy weights were in good demand, prices generally ranging from 265p to 290p depending upon quality, a few pens of handier 39kg to 41kg lambs touching on 300p if just a bit cleaner bred.

32kg to 35kg Lowland Lambs – A good store trade keeping prices in this range moving along well, 34kg at £99 from Menwith Pigs, 34kg £97 JS Stephenson, 35kg £97 W Stapleton & Son.

Mule and Masham Wethers were again a good trade with 46kg plus averaging 248p and the 36kg to 45kg av 255p.  Dave Raey sold 44kg at £114.50, J Pickles 47kg at £118.50 and top kilo price of 262p when selling 44kg at £115.50. RG Church sold Mules at £121 and £120, EP&JM Hutchinson had Mules at £123, CD&RF Kitching sold 44kg at £114.50, S&P Scrivin 44kg at £113.50, and Top price Mules came from BS Simpson, Springfield at £125.
