Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)
Knavesmire Butchers from York were out shopping early in the build up to Christmas securing top priced per kg entries for both steers and heifers. Paul and Lynne Baines of Middop trading in the name of J Baines produced a very sweet 525kg British Blue heifer to take the championship and top price per kg at 349.5p/kg (£1835) when selling to Knavesmire Butchers who followed up with the leading steer a 565kg Limousin cross from F&B Smith of Masongill at 337.5p/kg or £1907, also the highest gross on the day, Knavesmire secured a third purchase, this time from Hargreaves Farms Preston at £1897.28 or 308.5p/kg.
Interesting to note that 10 cattle, from 8 different vendors, in the total entry of 27 made 300p or over.
Steers averaged 287p/kg with 3 Blue Grey outside fed steers included and heifers averaged 293p/kg. Among the other highest gross prices was TH Mellin of Black Lane Ends whose 600kg cross Limousin heifer made £1893 or 315.5p/kg when sold to Ralph Pearson wholesale butchers from Bradford. D&A Gregory & Sons of Bacup secured the highest gross lightweight steer a 550kg British blue cross from R&E Cowperthwaite of Settle for £1779 or 323.5p/kg. Robertshaws Farm Shop at Thornton was the leading buyer on the day with 8 purchases which topped at 308.5p/kg for a 540kg Limousin cross steer from local finishers, S&NV Jowett of Queensbury.

Lambs
A cracking line up of lambs and ewes forward for sale today and an excellent trade throughout, levelling at 255p or £114.92 per head right through for all weights, grades and breeds. For local comparison the SQQ is 257.2p . Sell Live and Thrive!
Adrian Leach Hebden Bridge topped the trade per kilo at 426p when selling 38kg Beltex at £162. Selling at 342p as well.
Richard & Mark Ireland Whalley had the champion pen of lambs, kindly judged this month by Mr Anthony Swales. The later sold at 419p/kg at the top price per head of £172.
James Garth & Son Keasden made £170 or 377p/kg. J&J Garnett Draughton made 360p or £144. Paul Baines Gisburn was at 357p or £150, as were Ellis Bros Addingham Moorside who also sold at 352p or £154. G Fort Silsden made 350p of Beltex crosses. GM&A Jackson Little Eccleston made 347.8p or £160 of Beltex crosses, and JA Gibson & Son Church Fenton achieved 341.3p or £157. A further 36 pens made between 300p and 340p.
Other heavier Lambs not already mentioned making £150 plus included JR Crabtree Otley £160 £151, N&AD Boynton Ripon £158 £155 £150, J Baines £153 £151, Ellis Bros £150. The strength of todays trade shown by the fact a further 88 pens made in the £140’s and £130’s including many pens of heavy and medium butchers types, whilst commercial heavy’s and mediums mainly in the £120s or late teens.
Handy and lightweight lowland breeds could see primes making 260/280p regular away and commercials 250’s and late 240’s.
Mules were an excellent trade, averaging nearly 240p, and levelling at £108.41. Tops from JH Throup at £120 or CD&RF Kitching 248p.
Horned Lambs generally 210p to 220p, topping 238p for Dalesbred from RH&EA Close, Starbotton.
A good number of Cheviot and Cheviot crosses forward, Phillip Metcalfe leading the way at £127.

703 Cast Sheep
Ewes sold dearer on the week with a nice show of meat ewes forward and again fewer plain ewes and feeding ewes. 703 sold with Heavies and pure ewes in high demand. Suffolk X Beltex from AL Thompson, Foulridge sold to a top price of £163.50. Heavy crossed continental ewes £135-£150, mediums full meat £115-£125, medium ¾ meat ewes £95-£110 and lean ewes £75-£90. Plain ewes in the £60 range.
BFL ewes sold to £141.50 from CD&RF Kitching, Threshfield.
Mules dearer on the week with top price coming from GT Booth, £117.50. Heavies £95-£108 with some big strong ewes reaching a touch more. Medium Mules full meat £82-£90. ¾ meat mules £74-£85 and lean mules £55-£65 with a few plain smaller sorts less money.
Cheviots sold to £123.50 from J Caygill & Partners, Rylstone.
A tremendous show of Swales in today with top price of £85.50 from P Addyman & Son, Skipton. Other strong full meat ewes £74-£84 size dependant. Good ¾ meat ewes or smaller full meat ewes £60-£68, lean half meat ewes £40-£52 and plain end £20-£35. Just over 200 Swales in the entry seeing a breed avg of £51.

Rearing Calves to £430
48 Calves on offer today with trade similar to other centres up and down the UK. With more calves coming onto the market this left the middle of the run calves and black and whites at less money today. Best Cont calves still selling to extreme prices with 4-week-old calves from Percy, Janet and James Bolland, Airton selling to £430 x2. Best Blue calves £340-£400, middle of the run goods £260-£300 and smalls £200-£240.
Blue heifers a nice trade for good ended sorts £360 from JR Wellock, Eshton and £340 from M&R Smith, Winterburn. Middle run Blue heifers £240-£270 and smalls £180-£220.
Sim X bulls sold at £250-£260. Angus bulls pretty similar in trade. £240-£290.
Black and Whites less money but no pure Brit Fries in or real strong goods. Strongest calves £65-£75, mediums £45-£60 and smalls 30-£42.
