Prime Sheep, Sales Every Monday at 12:30pm
2,326 Prime Sheep comprising 2070 Prime Hoggs, 256 Cast Ewes & Rams
LAMBS
As expected there was a smaller entry of sheep today with the adverse having an impact on entry levels countrywide, so after the weekend we’ve had, maybe 2,070 lambs wasn’t such a bad return. Everything was up in price on the week with the tighter supply obviously having the desired effect on price, but the extra bids weren’t easy to come by telling us that there probably isn’t anything extra money in the lambs on the retail side.
Lightweight lambs were probably the trade of the day, whilst handy weight Lowland lambs were clearly dearer on the week. Mediums were a shade better on the week for the nice sorts, best heavies dearer, but commercial heavies just a similar trade.
OVER 52kg
Averaging 4p more on the week reflecting the better trade for smarter sorts. A few best pens into the £150’s, M Braidley of Carleton making £159, followed by JE Burrow at £154.
46kg to 52kg
Mark & Gemma Dobson of Hartlington topped the section at £162 for 48kg Continentals, followed at £158 for 46kg from JE Burrow Hanlith and £152 for 46kg from G&MA Jackson Little Eccleston, these also being the highest three prices per kilo as well.
36kg to 45kg
Messrs Jackson of Little Eccleston topped the days trade at £170 (395p) with a pen of 43kg Continentals, with another Lancashire vendor also travelling from the edge of the Fylde region A&K Kiernan St Michaels taking £162 (376p) home for 43kg Continentals who also made £160 of 45kg. The other top prices all came from the Red Rose county as Joe Bosworth of Rossendale made £160 of 40kg Beltex, these also being the top price per kilo at 400p. George Foster of Hesketh Bank, Preston made £160 (390p) of 41kg Continentals, Jimmy Towler of Grindleton Clitheroe £158 of 9 lambs at 45kg, and Messrs Jackson completed a good day making £158 (395p) and two pens at £150.
Messrs CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield flew the White Rose flag when making 389p or £148 of 38kg.
Generally the smart end of lambs made from around £100 over their weight to £120 over their weight.
Nice handier lambs 280p to 320p, Commercial goods 260p to 280p.
35kg or less
Several pens of Continentals either side 300p, RF Morphet Lancaster selling 34kg at £109 or 320p, George Foster Hesket Bank 309p or 35kg at £108. Lightweight Horned Wethers 225p to 240p, up to 260p for Blackies from JE Greenwood.
Mule & Masham Wethers a similar trade on the week. Some heavies reaching £132 from EP&JM Hutchinson, Faceby or 250p from CD RF Kithcing. Horned wethers 230p to 240p depending on quality, some plainer tups 220p.
