Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

PRIME CATTLE
A smaller show of retail cattle met an animated trade as lightweight cattle were back up in price ranging from 295p to 320p, whilst heavier cattle were short of requirements and in the 260p to 297p range.
E&M Townley & Son of Clapham sold a 525kg heifer at 319.5p/kg coming to £1677 in the lump purchased by Knavesmire Butchers for their retail shop in York. The same purchasers made it a clean sweep of the 4 top kilo prices with RT&J Critchley & Son Hutton selling a lovely 530kg heifer at 317.5p/kg £1682, F&B Smith Ingleton made 308.5p of a 580kg bullock coming to £1795, whilst Messrs Townley had a 540kg bullock make 303.5p/kg coming back at £1638.
Messrs JW Stockdale & Son of Burnsall had the leading gross sale at £1926 when their 715kg bullock made 269.5p to R Pearson Wholesale Butchers of Bradford. RT&J Critchley & Son made 31799 of a 605kg heifer selling to Barkers Yorkshire Butchers of Skipton.
CULL COWS
A tidy show of meated cows about today with best fleshed Black & Whites to 137.5p from RD Metcalfe & Son Brearton adding up to £1072, and top gross from GB Moorhouse, Bell Busk at £1153 when their Black & White made 136.5p. The best of the rest in the 120’s, leaner sorts either side of 100p.

LAMBS
A better trade today (+£6) and averages up by some margin given the stronger demand, especially for the light and handyweight lambs, mediums generally better, smart heavies always good to sell to the retail trade, whilst commercial mediums and heavies were similar on the week. .
OVER 52kg – This weight category averaged £6 up on the week, with top sale price at £164 for 55kg and £160 for 60kg from EP&JM Hutchinson to Knavesmire Butchers. Simon Bennett Silsden made £158 of 53kg and JR Crabtree Otley £158 of 62kg.
46kg to 52kg – In the lump Paul Simpson topped the weight range with 47kg Beltex at £180 (383p). Ian Marsden of Penistone made £175 of 51kg, Hayley Baines £170 of 47kg and EP&JM Hutchinson £170 of 47kg.
36kg to 45kg – The top sale price per head was £188 from Samantha Asquith of Otley selling 42kg Beltex at 442pkg to Knavesmire Butchers. PW Simpson Bolton by Bowland £178 or 423p of 42kg Beltex. JE Burrow Kirkby Malham had £170 for 45kg Beltex. EP&JM Huthcinson also made £170 of 45kg Beltex.
Another 9 pens in the £160’s. 6 pens made 400p or more, including PW Simpson at 400p and 410p, HB Atkinson 400p.
Smart Continental lambs that had been hard fed and in the 37kg to 44kg were 340p to 395p, whilst a nice skinned commercial type 37kg to 41kg was 300p to 335p regular away. Open skinned commercial types in the handier weight range 275p to 300p.
32kg to 35kg
Range was topped by JJ Gaarnett Draughton with 35kg at £111, FW&JM Eddington making £110 of the same weight.

Cheviot Wether Lambs from A&K Kiernan St Michaels topping the breed prices at £140 with others at £130, or 297p and 288p and 276p. Other lighter weights at 287p twice from W Holden & Son Oswaldtwistle.
Mule & Masham Wethers a slightly better trade on the week, top end 263p and 260p from JK Wilson & Son, 259 RG Church, but generally sneaking over 250p for the nice sorts. Gross prices £126 from Bob Stubbs Cheshire and £126 EP&JM Hutchinson, £125 AJ&GH Bland Mottram.

Horned wethers were dearer by some margin, with nice lightweight wethers hitting 267p from JE Greenwood Denholme, main of the nice wethers mid 230’s to 250’s.

EWES –
Ewes sold to a similar trade today with heaviest Mules £120-£135.50. Top price from S&PE Bowker & Sons, Earby and R&E Pollard, Colne. Mediums full eat mules £100-£112 and lean ewes £85-£95. Plain feeding mules £55-£75. Swale ewes topped at £94.50 from JR Lancaster, Bordley. Best full meat swales £72-£80 with mediums £60-£68 and lean mediums £50-£58 and plain ewes £30-£38 with a few small plain ewes £12-£25. Cheviots sold to £113.50 from A Brown, Gargrave. Scottish Blackface ewes sold to £90.50 from B Stubbs, Cheshire who showed a cracking run fed ewes. BFL ewes sold to £161.50 from CM Ryder, Blubberhouses. White faced ewes traded similar again with B&M Craven, Kexby selling smart full meat mediums with style to £168.50. Heavy ewes £145-£160, smart mediums £130-£150 and smart small ewes full meat £110-£125. Lean mediums £90-£112 with feeding ewes £70-£85. Overall white faced avg for all crossed ewes as well £120.
Ewes needed next week with all classes of full meat required.

38 Rearing Calves to £510

Calves up on the week with an entry of 38 forward and a solid trade for all classes. A mixed show forward with everything from smalls to good reared 12-week goods. Black and Whites topped at £300 from G Hayton & EC Stocks, Bolton Abbey for a 12-week-old Pure British Friesian. Nice rearing 4–6-week-old calves £60-£78. 1 Young Angus bull forward sold at £220 with a Hereford bull from JR Wellock, Eshton selling at £280. Continentals a flyer with Lim bulls selling to £510 from G Hayton & EC Stocks, Bolton Abbey for a Lim out of a pure Friesian at 12 weeks of age. Blue bulls topped at £450 from P&RM Sutcliffe, Queensbury with other nice rearing Blues with size at 5/6 weeks of age £370-£400 and younger rearing sorts £300-£350. An odd bobby at £265. Angus heifers sold to £265 with blue heifers selling to £350 from P&RM Sutcliffe, Queensbury. Other nice ended heifers £280-£350 and smaller/ younger goods £240-£270. Lim heifers sold at £310 from G Ayton & EC Stocks, Bolton Abbey.

17 Dairy

Monday 24th January saw our second sale of the month and trade was again brisk. Todays Championship was awarded by stand in judge Brian Moorhouse of the Aireburn herd to Mark Smith and the team from Winterburn with a 30kg fresh heifer by Applejax who was one of five heading home to Queensberry with Richard Sutcliffe for the days top price of £2200, while another heifer by Arbor Red also from Mark Smith also broke the £2000 barrier making £2100 heading north into Scotland. The freshly calved heifers averaged £1950.
Jack and Alan Wilson had strong trade for their incalf cows as part of their ongoing dispersal, with trade in this section peaking at £1700 for a wealthy but youthful cow coming with its fourth calf at the end of February, in calf to the Holstein Cookie Cutter Harper, she made £1700 to Robert Metcalfe, Brearton.
A batch of 11 crossbred in calf heifers for February onwards, in calf to the Limousin from Rick Bamforth averaged £1351, twice peaking at £1600, with the 11 eventually heading to three different buyers, with David Shuttleworth purchasing the volume of the batch with seven on his load.
Next sale will be two weeks today on Monday 7th February.
