Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

A good entry of cattle with variety to suit buyers seeking all weights and types. Demand particularly strong with steer average of 264p/kg and Continental heifer average of 263p/kg. Useful entry in the retail weights but the top price per kg also featured in the 600kg+ section at 275.5p/kg or £1681, a 610kg Limousin heifer sold by CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield to Barkers Yorkshire Butchers from Skipton. Top gross was a 640kg Limousin cross steer sold by RT&J Critchley & Sons of Hutton to Ralph Pearson, wholesale butchers, Bradford for 269.5p/kg or £1725. Down the weights it was still Pearsons wholesale butchers of Bradford featuring in the highlights with a 575kg Limousin steer from F&B Smith of Masongill which made 272.5p/kg or £1567 and a 580kg Limousin cross heifer at 273.5p/kg or £1586 from CD&RF Kitching with further multiple purchases from RT&J Critchley & Sons including Limousin steers at 269.5p/kg (£1536) and 268.5p/kg (£1598). In the retail weights Robertshaws Farm Shop bought a 525kg Limousin steer from Mesrs Critchley & Sons at 269.5p/kg or £1414. A 635kg B&W Hfr made 182.5p/kg or £1159 for MP Jennings (Dairy).

Cull Cow Prices

Demand for cast cows is considerable with just one Continental cross in the latest offer at 168.5p/kg, 2 Belted Galloways which averages 160p/kg and rest all dairies. Weight and meat sold well with Kingstone Farm selling an 815kg Holstein at 152.5p/kg or £1243 and N&J Thwaite with aN 815kg Holstein cow at 146.5p/kg or £1194. Better end of the steaking cows are touching 140p/kg and a most of the plain cows are 120pwith the odd exception. We have customers for B&Ws to feed at the ringside as well as usual short keep accounts, who still looking for cattle.

2,039 Prime Sheep comprising 1436 Spring Lambs, 38 Hoggs & 565 Cast Ewes & Rams

Normal service resumed in the sheep market this week with a tidy stabilising of prices and plenty of sheep on offer. A shortage of best smart handy weights today, but they sold to a top of 371p. There was a nice entry of heavies which were adding up well as shown by the 46kg to 52kg bracket levelled at £122, against an overall market selling average of £104.89. Commercial lambs took a bounce back up in price with a couple of customers definitely having more spark this week for this grade and prices for Suffolk Mules and first cross Continentals mainly taking a nice lift.

At the top end of proceedings it was WH Marsden, Crossgates, Leeds leading the way making £176 (366p) and £169 (352p) to Brayton Farmshop of Selby. Mr Marsden also made £152 (316p) and £151 (314p) of 48kg with both pens selling to Kendalls Farm Butchers of Pateley Bridge and Harrogate.
JA Stoney & Son of Pateley Bridge made £149 selling to L Brown. A&AR Phillipson of Burnley made £148 to Swaledale Foods of Skipton. WM Hall of Grassington made £147 of Charollias to A Atkinson and P Crabtree & Son of Otley reached £145 or the top price per kilo of 371p and another pen making 336p from R Crabtree of Otley, both selling to Brayton Farmshop.

 

A larger entry of ewes in today with price as expected holding strong with all classes wanted. 315 white faced ewes in sold to avg £109.80. Top price H Johnson & S Peel, Pateley Bridge selling to £161.60. Heavy ewes £132-£157 with good heavy best-bred ewes £145+ Mediums smart ewes’ full meat £125-£135. White faced first cross ewes £118-£130 for full meat slightly leaner and lighter ewes picked up in the £105-£115 with lean ewes £90-£105. Light weight white faced ewes around £85-£90. Plain ewes sold accordingly with buyers wanting all classes to stock up for the upcoming festival. 85 mules sold to avg £88 with heavies £98-£109.50 and mediums £80-£92 with lean ewes £70-£80 and plain ewes accordingly. Swales sold to £83.50 with full meat ewes £75-£83.50 lean swales £54-£68 with light weight and plain ewes £30-£42. Beltex sold to £137.50 from JA Stoney & Son.

More ewes required every week with plenty of competition ringside and buyers operating on plenty of accounts to handle large amounts of ewes, and several account now looking for ewes suitable for feeding.

29 Rearing Calves to £460

 

Calves selling very well today especially the Natives and Continentals. Blue bulls sold to £460 from PJ&JE Boland, Kirkby Malham followed by £450 from IR&DE Wellock, Kirkby Malham. Small/ mediums £305-£380. The calves with better with better conformation and size £405+. Hereford bulls sold to £315 with Angus heifers a flyer to avg £221 for youngsters. Blue heifers sold to a wide audience with the majority selling £320-375 for nice rearing mediums. Top price heifer blue heifer sold to £385 from JR Wellock, Eshton. Youngsters sold between £240-£280.
