Prime Cattle (under 30 mos) Sales every Monday at 11:30am

A light entry with feeders busy with lambing and the April show next week and cattle still very good to sell. An odd Black and White heifer in the entry and a Continental heifer average of 288p/kg and steers at 284p/kg. In the retail weights 293.5p/kg was the top for CD&RF Kitching, Threshfield for a 560kg Blonde cross heifer which sold to Ralph Pearson, Bradford. The highest priced steer at 291.5p/kg (£1822) was another entry from Mesrs Kitching, another Limousin weighing 625kg which sold to Ralph Pearson. Additional retail interest already for next week’s April Show and Sale of Prime Cattle with judging at 11.15am.

N/S LAMBS
Numbers growing each week, and a slightly better selection in general this week. With trade peaking for Charollais Lambs from CW Marwood at £148 with others at £144 £143 £142 £141 twice and £140.

O/S LAMBS
Trade generally on the up, with handier weighted hoggs better to sell again, whilst Mediums were also in better demand. Smart sorts usually sell themselves and today was no exception with a good trade seen for the smart end. Heavies and overweights were a good chunk dearer too as the 60kg+ overweight type were dearer on the week.

OVER 52kg
Prices to £164 for Continentals from J&M Blakey of Bolton By Bowland, followed at £159 for Suffolk crosses from KN&CA Heath, Macclesfield. Other nice sorts £148 to £158.

46kg to 52kg
Another lift in prices with the range average up by 4p on the week. 1166 head fell in to this range today and topped at £170 from EP&JM Hutchinson Faceby. Messrs Atkinson made £165, and WAVJ&JA Towler £160

36kg to 45kg
A good trade this week, with 286p average seen for all breeds in this range. EP&JM Hutchinson took top kilo price on the day when selling 37kg at £157 or 424p. Messrs Atkinson made 421p (16 @38kg £160) and 408p (8 @ 41kg £167.50). J Kitching Harrogate achieved 379p 39kg £148, with other quality hoggs at £160 from D&KCB Shuttleworth, £156 WAVJ&JA Towler.

Hill Bred
Mules and Mashams a sharper trade for nice weights, better end reaching 260p to 262.8p from RG Church, 261p PT&L Johnson, Lincoln and 260p SR Dorey Newark. Heavies to £139 from KN&CA Heath Macclesfield and to £133.50 from N&J&S Taylor, Sheffield.

EWES –

Ewes jumping the gears today with a flying trade on all classes and a full ringside of active buyers. Some large heavy continentals from IR Dodson, Sowerby Bridge selling to a top price of £227.50. Top price Tup came from Craven Farms at £231.50. Best bred heavy continentals £200-£230 with good well fleshed pure ewes £175-£190. First crossed heavies £165-£180 with mediums well fleshed ewes £145-£158 and small full fleshed ewes £120-£135. Lean ewes £120-£140 with plain white-headed ewes a step up with only a few mixers selling to realisation. White headed ewes avg £145 throughout. Suffolk’s sold to £187.50 from ML Evans, Keighley with heavies £165-£180 medium lean ewes £130-£140 and plainer end £100-£115. Beltex ewes topped at £191.50 from Ellis Bros. Mules topped at £157.50 from David & Karen Shuttleworth, Gargrave. Heavies £138-£150, mediums £118-£132 and small full fleshed ewes £95-£108. Lean ewes with frame £100+ whilst plain ewes sold at £70-£85. Horned ewes a flyer with Lonks selling to £129.50 from SP& VM Morris, Dutton and Scotch Blackface ewes selling to £127.50. Plenty of Scotch Blackface ewes selling £100 upwards and mediums selling in the £90-£110 range. Swales sold with the best over £100. Full meat ewes £85-£95, mediums sold at £68-£80 and smaller ewes £47.50-£60.

20 Rearing Calves to £390 Sales Every Monday at 10:30am

Calves slightly steadier with less numbers about and plenty of youngsters forward. Young Black & White bulls £20-£55 with a few bobbies at a tenner. Some British Friesians sold at £150-£205. Lim bulls forward sold at £300 for two and only 5 blue bulls forward today with prices ranging from £315-£390. Top price blue bull came from RE Ayrton & Son, Eastby. Blue heifers sold at £240.

Best bred ewes with strong lambs selling at £70-£80 a life for both Singles and Pairs. Plenty of Mule singles selling at £130-£148 an outfit with correct mule ewes with twins £150-£180. Younger ewes in the £170-£180 range with faming older ewes only a touch less. Stronger lambs still selling the best with buyers still cautious with the grass situation!
