Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

The Easter Prime Show produced another high-quality entry with judge Phil Gregory finding his champion in the pen of CD&RF Kitching from Threshfield. The champion an exceptional 570kg British blue cross heifer sold to Robertshaws Farm Shop, Thornton for 293.5p/kg or £1673, whilst the reserve champion was a 560kg Limousin steer from F&B Smith of Masongill which made 278.5p/kg (£1560) when selling to D&A Gregory&Sons for sale in their Bacup shop. Steers averaged 246.23p/kg and heifers 248.3p/kg with an average weight of 570kg. Top price on the heavy cattle was a 615kg Limousin cross heifer at 264.5p/kg or £1627 which was also sold by CD&RF Kitching to Ralph Pearson of Bradford. Usual sale next week with usual buyers in attendance.

Cull Cow Prices

Cull cow trade continues to fly with less meat on offer in the dairies. As usual once past the better end of the dairies at 140p+ the lean and steaking cows are 130p or thereabouts. Heavy Angus adding up to £1364 when sold for 152.5p/kg.

3002 Prime Sheep

An Excellent show of sheep today with 3,000 Prime & Cast Sheep penned for sale, Spring Lambs averaging 369p for 107 head sold, and over 2500 hoggs averaged top side of 300p across the whole sale (SQQ 307p) or £133 per head.

 

A super show of 107 Spring Lambs today for the Easter Prize Show & Sale sold to a full audience of retail butcher and Wholesale buyers and produced an excellent average of nearly 370p or £152 per head, an excellent reward for the producers who have lambed early this time to supply the trade.
Livestock Buyer Mick Etherington picked a pair of Continentsl lambs consigned by Robert Towers of Ingleton as his champions and a pair of Charollais Crosses form Charles Marwood of York as the reserves. The Champions made £178 per Head (434p) and sold to Rowland Agar Wholesale Butchers from Ilkley. The Reserve Champions made £168 (430p) and went to the same purchaser.
Top price on the day was the first prize Single Continental from RJ&J Towers and this made £188 (408p) and sold to wholesale butchers Hartshead Meats Ltd of Mossley who also snapped up the top price per kilo lamb at 440p (£185) from CW Marwood & Son.

 

The smart end of hoggs were a great trade with handyweights from 365p to a top of 431p (38kg £164) purchased by Vivers Scotlamb and ten pens 400p or more. Heavies regular £150 to £170, topping at £182 from Hill & Wright, Doncaster purchased by Harthead Meats, 11 pens at £170 or more, and another 39 pens from £160 to £169. On top of this an additional 59 pens made from £150 to £159. The trade is definitely there at the moment for smart and heavy hoggs, keep them coming to our competitive ringside and achieve full value.
Nice handy weights were 330p to 360p, and it was the commercial Lowland 37kg to 43kg that were really good to sell this week with the majority 290p to 325p.
Hill bred hoggs were back up in price this week, a good run of Cheviots from A&K Kiernan typical of the day, weighing 4kg to 47kg seeing prices nicely over 300p £136 to £143, whilst best Cheviots sold to £147 from Hill & Wright.
Mules up in price by £5 per head on the week or 12-15p/kg to £136.50. Good Horned Lambs also rising in value with best to top side of £130 and Gritstones wethers to £150

Ewes similar trade all the way through with vendors starting to off load fed sheep from Derbyshire and Lincolnshire. Suffolks to £162.50 from TR Craven, York. Heavies £145-£162 full meat mediums £120-£135. Smalls/ lean ewes £85-£100 and medium half meat £105-£115. Overall Suffolk average £120. 172 white faced ewes sold and a top price from P, Crabtree & Son £178.50 followed by £171.50 from the same vendor. Best ewes £149.50-£160 with some exceptional best-bred ewes £160+. Heavy crossed ewes £130-£140 slightly smaller full meat £115-£125. Small full meat ewes £105-£115. Lean crossed ewes ££90-£105 and plainer end ewes £70-£80. Mules a touch easier, biggest mules £110-£121.50 Top price P Crabtree & Son, Otley followed by J Shuttleworth, Rylstone at £120.50. Horned ewes similar trade. Meat swales £78-£90 Lean ewes or smaller goods £60-£75 and Plain/smalls £30-£48. Tups a tremendous trade top price rom R Emmot, Silsden at £183.50.

As expected, a much smaller show with most vendors bringing them for next week Bank Holiday Monday. Plenty of trade for the goods on offer. Black and Whites to £110 overall avg £68. Blue bulls to £410, £405 from RE Ayrton & Son. Blue heifers well sort for averaging £300. Some young Angus heifers sold away to £160. 70+ calves expected next week.

336 Breeding Sheep

 

A nice show of sheep on a brighter morning brought an increased attendance of buyers and a good trade throughout with better outfits of Suffolk and Texel ewes with twins £260 to £280 the family, with Thomas Boothman of Linton twice hitting the top price mark with Texel Crosses, and also making £260 per family of two other pens.
Messrs Craven from York also presented four nice pens and commanded between £265 and £275 per family on each occasion.

JW Hardcastle of Harrogate topped at £250, as did RG Johnson & Son of Felliscliffe. Dave White of Hebden presented his first draw for the season weeing Mules with Twins up to £240 the outfit.
Single outfits saw JW Hardcastle make £172, RG Johnson £160 and TH Heslop £155.
