3,697 Prime Sheep comprising 3206 Prime Lambs & 491 Cast Ewes & Rams
After an excellent day on Sunday with the show and sale of prime sheep, today was back to our regular weekly sale and despite the terrible weather over the previous 24 hours, there was a brilliant entry of nearly 3200 lambs, and a superb overall selling average 295.9p/kg (SQQ of 303.2p/kg) or £132.96 per head.
Anything suitable for retail butcher and quality wholesale orders, regardless of weight, saw a very fast selling trade. The smart handy lambs were 325p to a top of 379.5p (39kg £148) and 373.3p (45kg £168) both pens from RL&AR Phillips of Burton Leonard, and generally on the day the best 40kg to 45kg types making £140 to £165. Commercial handyweights followed suit as well, with 1908 lambs weighing 36kg to 45kg in the sale averaging 303.88p or £128.54 per head.
Heavies were up another gear, with £145 to £175 a common price range for nice sorts, 129 pens made from £178 to £145, the top of £178 coming for 55kg Beltex (322p) from JS Eddleston of Great Harwood, who sold others at £174 and £171. EP&JM Hutchinson were in the mix at £175 and £170.
Cheviot bred lambs were good to sell, and excellent run from A&K Kiernan of Preston topping at £168 or 323p. Mule Wethers also sold to a strong trade with wholesale firms keen for supply, 275p to 290p the range for the nice end of wethers today, to £147.50 from EP&JM Hutchinson and 292p from CD&RF Kitching.

Ewes
Ewes up a gear today with the Xmas show a huge success bringing some real well-bred ewes forward. The Show was won by JL North, Giggleswick for his pair of Texel ewes which went on to sell at £301.50 to L Brown, Halifax and Reserve Champion went to KW Gamble, Easingwold for his 1st prize pen of 5 to the same purchaser at £248.50. A total of 14 ewes from 4 different vendors today reached over £200. Pure Texel ewes with size £170+ mediums £130-£155 first crossed heavy ewes £158-£170. Nice weighing ewes £125-£140 and medium ewes with full meat £120-£130. Light weight ewes with full meat £85-£105. Jacobs sold to £117.50 B Hawksworth, Sheffield.
Mules sold to £122.50 from JR&EL Mawson, Elslack with 1st prize ewes from SM&S Collinson sold at £120.50. Medium’s Mules £90-£102 with plain ewes wanting more feed and weight on £58-£65 and lean ewes £78-£85
Suffolks sold to £160.50 from High Harbour Farm, Middle Rasen.
Swale ewes a nice trade with meat mediums £62-£74 and heavy ewes up-to £97.50 from Messrs J Baines, Gisburn for their 1st prize pen of Hill ewes. Lean swales £38-£48. An overall selling average today of £108 per head for all ewes consigned.
More ewes required every week with orders strong every Monday with a full ringside of buyers actively competing.

Rearing Calves to
Calves had no let up in trade with buyers out to fill pens even after the bumper entry for the Xmas show last week. Black and Whites sold to avg £86 with all goods selling between £75-£110 for good honest rearers. Blue bulls a good solid trade with strong month old rearers £340-£400 and slightly lesser goods £280-£320. Blue heifers again a strong trade with top price of £370 for a month old shapey goods from JP&KE Hartley, Beamsley. Strong goods £290-£340 and smaller goods £230-£280.




Dairy
At the Christamas Show of Dairy cattle the winners of the Craven Cattle Marts Ltd Perpetual Challenge Trophy were Mesrs RW&M Walker of Keighley whose 3 week calved Black and White heifer, giving 34 litres sold to the show judge Kevin Midgley of Thorpe Bassett for £2580. Reserve champion was another entry from RW&M Walker, again 3 weeks calved and selling to PMR Sutcliffe of Queensbury.
