1,857 Prime Sheep comprising 1137 Spring Lambs, 284 Hoggs & 436 Cast Ewes & Rams

Another large show of Spring Lambs as vendors coming from a wide area, from the Fylde in the West to the Vale of York, Lincolnshire and Newark in the East to take advantage of the prices on offer, to be met with a bustling ringside of buyers swelled by the Bank Holiday attendance of two additional retail butchers.
The head line prices for Lambs maybe not just as eye popping as last week, but it was PB Fox & Son, Dunnington, York who topped the shop again at 450p with Beltex crosses selling to Brayton Farmshop, who also purchased at 435p form MJ Lofthouse, Murton, York. PA&NS Tattersall, Ellerton York, made 428p and 426p purchased by Vivers Scotlamb.
A&AR Phillipson of Burnley topped in the lump at £186, this again going to Brayton Farmshop.
Jonathan Frankland of Rathmell made £184, PB Fox & Son £182, R Spencer & Son Rotherham £180, A Lawson & Son Tadcaster made £180 twice and B Poucher & Son Horncastle Lincolnshire weighed in at £179.
Handyweight Continental lambs with plenty of flesh on board or creep fed are selling well and getting away at excellent prices as the overall selling average of 348p for every lamb forward clearly shows, with 350p plus easily attained for such like or a rough rule of thumb about £100 over the weight, whilst a straight commercial handyweight lamb was more like 330p 335p (£85-£95 over). Suffolk Mules with good backs sold as well as anything with 340p/350p a price range for anything in the correct weight slot.
Heavy Butchers Lambs a fantastic trade, with £120 to £130 over the weight with one run of 33 Down cross lambs averaging 48kg and £171 per head. Other similar weights of fed lambs in the same price region.

Cull ewes sold dearer in general with 8 buyers ringside operating on several accounts a piece. Medium ewes and Lean ewes continue to get dearer whilst large ewes remain the same brill trade as recent weeks. Trade topped for some cracking ewes from JR Frankland, Rathmell at £187.50 followed by the same vendor with ewes at £177.50. Best bred Texels £160+ for the number 1 ewes. Heavy first cross ewes £140-£158 for both Suffolks and cont x ewes. Medium ewes £115-£125 I general. Half meat ewes all £100+ with lean ewes £85+. 165 white faced ewes avg £122. Mules avg £102. Heavies £100-£118.50 with top price from G&G Thornton, Knaresborough. Medium ewes £90-£100 and the odd plain ewe £65-£75. Swales hit a trade with Half to ¾ meat £70-£80, full meat ewes to £98.50 with bottom line for these goods being £88. Plain Swales £42+.

More ewes required weekly with buyers leaving short of requirements.
